Thank you, Mikael.
So my interest in the Goldnote DS-10 (I’m very happy with there Phono Stage PH-10 and PSU-10) has cooled down and I’ll wait for the root certification of my Primare Pre35 Prisma.
OnTopic: Until this I’m using primarly the SoTM SMS-200 Neo + Keces p8 together with the USB-Dac of my Primare Pre35.
I’m very fond of the Bryston BDPs. I have two BDP-2 (with IAD) and a BDP-1. Just sold another BDP-1. Great Roon Ready endpoint, as well as being a very useful device with MPD and DLNA. The BDP-3 is the current model, but the BDP-2 is very close sonically performance wise. It’s $1500 per unit to upgrade from a BDP-2 to a BDP-3.
I started out with a Sonore product, but it gave such fits that I traded it in.
To cease torturing you guys, the decision was: I purchased the Lumin X1 and the Cocktail Audio x45Pro, and am auditioning them next week. Hence, I will return the one I don’t like as much! ![]()
I am currently running the BDP3 and it is giving me fits with attempting to recognize the DAC through the USB output. the BNC is fine, but no bueno with the Bryston. Vinnie Rossi has been awesome with his DAC customer service, but Bryston’s customer service told me “It’s the dac.” Well, it was actually a malfunctioning Bryston GUI. When they work, they sound awesome. But I’m looking for some End-Game kit, hence the Lumin or Cocktail.
Like Hans said „tone down the natural desire for higher figures and use rationality“
F.i. It seems you want to have a sampling rate support up to 384 kHz but how many music can you actually buy at that sampling rate?
I use an Innuos Zen Mark 3 as Roon Server connected to a Linn Selekt DSM, and it works smoothly. No hassle between labels like Roon ready, Roon approved, Roon tested or whatsoever. And The Selekt DSM has USB, but you better connect it via ethernet anyway.
When evaluating I thought about the MQA compatibility but in the end it’s like 384 kHz: Nice by figures but not relevant in terms of quantity of available music.
On the other hand Linn DSMs offer Room correction, a function one should not underestimate.
If I had a nickel for every time I’ve read something similar in this forum…
The be all and end all test of equipment, evidently. ![]()
Fair enough. The reason I was insisting on highest resolution possible was in an attempt to mitigate future obsolescence. I honestly can’t hear the difference either, just wanted this unit to not be lapped by a new model in 18 months.
I really wanted MQA, not because I am an acolyte but wanted to compare my Vinnie Rossi DAC with an MQA capable DAC.
When I gutted my house I ran cat 6 to each room, so the streamer will be hardwired via ethernet. When I was referring to USB, I was referring to output. I want the streamer to have optical, BNC, and USB output so I can troubleshoot my VR DAC. I haven’t committed to which one I’m actually going to use in the long term.
As far as room correction goes, I considered the Trinnov, but in the end the Lumin and Cocktail specs won me over. As soon as I give both of them a listen, I will alert the media as to which one I’m keeping. ![]()
You go into Settings>Audio>[the endpoint], then from the “Device Setup” menu there’s a section called “Advanced”, and under that you can specify the Max rate for PCM.
Thanks for this insight, Matthew, this makes your priorities much more comprehensible for me. Alas, it’s the bane for us technic aficionados that any given units can become outdated after 18 months. Because Linn keeps updating even 10 years old units, made me consider them.
Likewise Lumin, in terms of the firmware at least - it was one of several reasons for me going with a D2. Not sure about 10 years, but I think all models (past/present) still receive relevant firmware updates.
That is correct. Our oldest model is dated 2012 and has been made Roon Ready (not just Roon compatible). The latest firmware is just a month ago. We may have another minor firmware update real soon.
Thanks Bevan! Nice review!
Sorry Bryston tech support isn’t coming through. Can’t say I disagree with you. I’ve called Bryston several times myself since the start of the year, and leave messages that go unanswered. I’ve had mostly good luck with their stuff.
Golf Note DSD 512 seems to be through the USB B only. DSD 64 seems to be ethernet & wifi.
Do not know if that is a hardware or software limitation.
Just asked the dealer I am working with regarding Gold Note DSD. He quickly sent a screen shot of Roon signal path with DSD 64 identified.
Maybe a newer firmware update provided this?
I asked the manufacturer of the digital amps in my man-cave, if i would get a SQ improvement from changing streamer from Chromecast Audio/bitperfect stream, to for example a DCS Bridge…and the answer was negative. The amp re-sample the signal, so any bitperfect source should give the same SQ.
I asked this question as i earlier tried to compare my Mac Mini/optical output, with 6K USD Audio server, and neither me nor the seller could hear a difference when we played the same files on the two sources when played over my hybrid electrostatic speakers.
So in my case, for my digital amps, the “best cost-no-object source“ is any bitperfect source which is convenient to use with Roon.
Just saw a screen shot showing Gold Note on Roon with DSD 64.
Who are you working with regarding Gold Note? TN?
I agree that room correction makes a significant difference, even in my man-cave without parallel walls, and with acoustic treatment. I don’t use Roons version, but the system built into my amps.
I find the speakers and room interaction/correction, the 2 most significant factors for SQ.
And Roon is a significant factor in my musical enjoyment because of the superior user interface.
It can be, that after the last firmware upgrade things have changed.
Anyway: It seems (for me) not worth to buy another Streamer/DAC, which handles “only” DSD 64 or 24/192 over Ethernet.
To be completely honest, I got an email a few days after I had the DS-10 at my place explaining a few oddities (from the importer here in Sweden). It was a an early sample and it needed to had it’s identity set as a DS-10 rather than the IS-1000 streaming unit I identified itself as. It was only a matter of key combinations on the remote handset, he said.
So, yes I assume they will fix some oddities as we go along. But that is also the reason for me calling it “half baked”… I want to know that the product I buy works today, not some vague promise it will, in a few months or so.
