Bristol Hi-Fi Show 2023 - A Fleeting Glimpse

I have been to a few hifi shows and have never found them much use for checking if anything is worth buying, only for finding out what you definitely would not buy.

I think a lot of people say that, although I’ve actually found the Bristol show surprisingly helpful at narrowing down my options in the past - in fact, almost everything I’ve bought, I’d heard there first (as well as doing some home trials). However, it just seemed to me this year that many systems were either not optimally setup, or not playing music that I could appreciate…or maybe I was just feeling grumpy

I would agree with that, just 5 or 6 stands managed to produce a sound that I wanted to listen to for a few minutes…

That’s some headphone setup!

Did you get chance to hear the top end Mezes with the Manley headphone amp? I think that’s top of my lottery win list now. Like you I was very pleasantly surprised by the Dynaudio Focus 50 - a lovely sound. The Vivid Kayas were also good. I thought the ATCs needed a bigger room as the one they had wasn’t coping with the bass too well. Were I in the market it would have whetted my appetite though.

Oh and if you don’t like the big Heritage Fynes then look at the F series, which are absolutely beautifully finished - well up to top end Sonus Faber standards.

And I’ll probably be at Ascot so tap me on the shoulder if you see me there

I didn’t get listen to any headphones at all partly due to “queue to listen” &/or indifferent stand staff.
I think Fyne loudspeakers sound excellent and the finish second to none but these, to me are plain ugly….the “standard square box” designs are slightly more appealing but Sonus Faber & Franco Serblin lead the way (for me).

I’ll settle for a pair of Subs for now and maybe head to CanJam to check the headphones out…

My personal view of ugly speakers…

Sadly another rather underwhelming show this year…Wilson Benesch again sounded fantastic, as did ATC, and I was impressed by the more modest exposure room with the Graham LS6/f in evidence, as well as the Focal Aria Evo X, but not much else caught my ear. Anyone else have any favourites?

@dhusky It’s worth setting up a new thread so that anyone interested can spot the ‘24 info.

@Roon_Moderators could you please close this topic and, maybe, split the last post into a new topic for ‘24. TIA
