Build PC for Roon or not?

Hello, just purchase 2 weeks ago Synology NAS to be as Roon server to test software and I have to say that I like it  so next step … use Synology as NAS just and build new PC directly for Roon and as streamer setup it on Roon Rock. Not interested in Roon

Any recommendation from you guys for your builds around 2k Euro ? I know that’s need to be case fanless, good USB card to go directly to DAC via USB or DDC between. Just read about cases from hdplex and akasa that are quite good. Any recommendations?

This sounds to me as you don’t want to use ROCK and more likely a Windows variant.

  • Linux support for DACs isn’t that great in general and ROCK doesn’t have a patched kernel to improve upon the situation as some retail standalone streamers have but you can usually download Windows drivers for DACs that allow to use the highest supported input rates of the DACs
  • There is no reason to expect ROCK shipping with drivers for USB cards as it is tailor-made to run on a selected range of NUCs
  • You can’t add anything, including drivers of any kind, to ROCK

If you’re in no need for drivers other than the standard USB Audio Class 2.0 drivers for DACs and the hardware that is present on a supported NUC PC though, go ahead with ROCK and you get a stable Roon Server appliance. Maybe take a look at:
