Building a ROCK

My Christmas project to build a new ROCK based on NUC13ANHi7. But Roon’s website seems a bit outdated. I can find 16GB or 32GB RAM for the same or lower price, and likewise 1TB SSD is nearly the same price as 250GB. For example, this package price is the cheapest for 32GB/1TB, and the price actually goes up if I change to 8GB and 250GB.

Would it be ok to have an over-spec’ed ROCK?

Also, is NUC13ANHi7 the best CPU available?

Yes. More RAM than it needs won’t make it faster but it won’t hurt. Though use 2x16 rather than 1x32 for a small speedup.

You will never use more than a small fraction a 1TB disk but it gives the firmware more cells to play with and it should help the disk lifetime somewhat. Make sure to choose an SSD that has a high TBW (terabytes written) value.

Thanks. I have some personal issue with Samsung (as a company). Is there a reason to prefer Samsung SSD, provided the specs are the same?

You’d have to look up reliability charts online, but most likely you’ll find that there is no clear picture and Samsung are generally well regarded. (Use the EVO model for the OS disk if you choose Samsung)

All reasonable manufacturers publish TBW values, which is the number of written TB until you can, on average, start to expect failures. (But there will always be some variations depending on manufacturing batch, and how well this is under control varies between manufacturers but also over time within one manufacturer)

I recommend the following. Excellent performance and price, plus good reviews.

Thanks. Here again, 1TB is cheaper, so it is safe to go for 1TB, right?

Yes, go for that size.

Just think of the larger drive and more memory as “future” proofing, if you ever want to install Linux or (shudder) Windows… you are ready to go.

All my SSD drives are Samsung. M.2, 4tb internal storage, T5 and T7 USB drives for backups and external storage for multiple laptops/desktops. Never had one fail. Almost 5 years now, NUC runs 24/7. No issues, yet. I trust them for those reasons.

Others may be the same, but I don’t know from personnel experience.

Thats a lot of NUC. ROCKn Roll…

I would say use thecPro line.

The PRO has zero benefit. It is marginally faster, which one won’t notice, but has the exact same TBW value. Edit: And the warranty is longer, if someone wants that.

It’s the only 8 Tb SSD available (I think)

Mine is Crucial 4Tb , there were no Samsung available when I built , just post Covid.

The 256 is WD Green

Runs like a dream

Maybe. But we are talking about the OS drive for ROCK here. There is no need for as much a 1TB SSD let alone 8TB. I used a 256GB EVO drive when I was running ROCK.

For internal storage, the SATA QVO range is perfectly adequate because of the use pattern. Files tend to be written once and then never (or at least very rarely) modified.

The QVO range extends to 8TB:
