Buying tips for a DAC

Yes, Roon recognizes them both.I stream to both all in native format. Really anything with an XMOS SOC seems to work well with Ropieee and Roon. (I have a Leaf Audio Dac that was also properly recognized including all supported formats.)

I’m in the same hunt and have been for a long while. I’ve narrowed it down to Holo Spring2 Wildism Extreme (R2R with beautiful design and bespoke modification workmanship from Hong Kong and that special R2R sound. Does crazy DSD 1024 & PCM 1.536M and runs in NOS or OS), Topping D90 (AKM 4499 but no headphone jack & with lots of reviews, said to address the weaknesses in bass control of previous AKM designs), RME ADI DAC fs (very good and continued support from the company for free software feature upgrades and excellent community of helpful pro/experienced users, pretty reasonable headphone and very low noise IEM jack). Waiting for reviews on the Gustard A22 (dual AKM4499). The Topping & Gustard re-sale values can be poor which is a consideration if you tend to change your gear; I don’t. I’ve come to the realisation that until I open my wallet and blow away the cobwebs, the world is my oyster and I’m really enjoying the research. Have fun mate!

No they are not. You need to use another streamer in front of them.

That does not mean they are Roon Ready. Roon Ready has a very specific meaning in that it is only used for DACs with network inputs that are running RAAT code and have been tested by Roon and then certified as such. Neither Topping has an network connection and cannot be Roon Ready.

Thank you very mach!

My bad, I’m still pretty new to Roon and the community and I missed the specific meaning of the question. I didn’t intend to mislead anyone.

These are just standard inexpensive DACs without network connections and without streaming capability. I use RPI based network streamers running Ropieee connected to the DAC USB input.

Again I apologize for the confusion I created.

No problemo! Given that I am also working my real job and answering posts on the side during coffee breaks, I can come across a bit too terse.

The Topping DACs do measure well.

Thank you Daniel!

I bought the DX7s based on measurements since no one I know was using one. I’m very pleased with its overall performance, so I purchased the DX3pro for late night headphone use based on that experience. The DX3pro seems to be an excellent match to my Oppo Planar 3 headphones, I do use a bit of EQ applied in ROON DSP.

Remember its a journey, and supposedly a fun one!

Check Soncoz LA-QXD1 (new DAC from designer of very popular khadas tone board)
http://www.soncoz.com/laqxd1.html#/

This week I have received my TEAC nt-505 as replacement in the living room for my Topping D70 that has moved to my study.

Both use two separate AKM 4497 DAC’s, and both sound in the same league.

The main differences are:

  • TEAC nt-505 is a fully Roon Ready up to 24/192 via Ethernet connection as Roon endpoint/networkplayer
  • TEAC nt-505 can internally up-sample up to PCM 384 and DSD 512
  • TEAC nt-505 can be connected to Roon ROCK via USB and Roon ROCK can provide the usual DSP facilities.
  • TEAC nt-505 prefers ethernet connection over USB; in case USB sould be preferred, the ethernet has to be physically disconnected at the backside.
  • TEAC nt-505 is internally fully balanced to the level of having two transformers for power supply.
  • TEAC may well have a decent headphone amplification, but the output is an unusual 4 connection 3.5 jack on the front, or two 3 pin XLR output at the backside.
  • TEAC nt-505 has a menu setting to select pin 2, or pin 3 as hot for the two 3 pin XLR at the backside.
  • TEAC has a far, far better OLED display and a better/solid remote control.
  • TEAC has two internal clocks for 44.1 and 48 khz (like Topping) and
  • a rather expensive separate 10 Mhz clock (TEAC CG-10M) can be connected to the TEAC in order to improve DSD play back.
  • TEAC has internally MQA support
  • TEAC has LDAC and aptX HD support for playback from e.g. a mobile phone.

A review of TEAC nt 505 in Dutch is available at:

This review states:
In the test room we still have the Mytek Brooklyn DAC +, a DAC that is without a doubt one of the best in the world. It’s fun to compare, because if you listen to the TEAC NT-505 next to the Mytek, you can hear how two excellent devices each offer something different. The Brooklyn DAC + gives you more insight and fresh detail, the NT-505 presents a coherent image with light and just the right touch of warmth.”

Is this upgrade valuable?
Good question.
In case one wishes a good looking fully ROON Ready DAC/networkplayer, the answer is arguable, yes.
On the other hand, both Topping D70 (€ 550) and TEAC NT-505 (around € 1250) are soundwise in the same league.
And Topping D70 is still a best buy for its budget, arguable Topping D90 is a triffle better nowadays.

XDuoo TA-30 Dac + valve amp I am testing this and the Topping Dx7 pro and I have to say that XDuoo has more power and is warmer. Although the topping is more balanced in topping … both are beastly, I have serious doubts to decide on one

Measurement here.

A very impressive implementation of the ESS ES9038Q2M SABRE from the guy who figured out how to solve the IMD hump which plagues many, many ESS ES9038 SABRE implementations.

For those in Europe, I see that it’s available from audiophonics.fr.

Great dac, but only with variable output… I prefer fixes output for pure dac.

The Topping DACs (E30, D90, …) have a “pure DAC” mode, which bypasses the digital volume control.

I’ve got two of the Topping DACs, a DX3 Pro (for headphones) and a D70 (for my main system) and they’re both great. Also have a Mytek Liberty for MQA and some headphone usage, also great. All three work with a RPi front-end running RoPieee, and are recognized by Roon.

Nice !

And E30 vs d70 ?

No idea, don’t have the E30.

When @Rugby says ‘coffee breaks’, he literally means a couple ten minute stretches when he isn’t drinking coffee! How else does one get so much done?
