I wonder if a device running Roon’s RAAT client would be usable by Roon as an endpoint even if Roon does not “know about it” in the sense that it is not RoonReady certified?
More specifically, free implementations like Ropieee have probably not gone through a RoonReady certification and yet still work as an endpoint with Roon.
Ropieee, and other systems that can be configured as a Roon endpoint, run Roon Bridge.
Roon Bridge is an implementation of RAAT which is made available by Roon expressly for this purpose and is thus, in effect, Roon Ready certified.
Roon Bridge is available for Linux (on Raspberry Pi and i64), Windows and MAC OS X and can be downloaded and installed from Roon Downloads site.
Other than that, it is not, generally, possible to use unauthorized RAAT [SDK] client devices. It has occasionally been possible to use some specific devices by mistake. Such situations are generally addressed pretty quickly such that continued use becomes impossible.

(Here I am with a brain the size of a planet and they ask me to pick up a piece of paper. Call that job satisfaction? I don't.)

In addition to @Wade_Oram’s reply, Roon Bridge cannot be distributed with hardware. So, for example, Ropieee downloads and installs Roon Bridge when first setup.
