I’ve moved off Sonos Software and Roon now runs my Home. I love it, can create zones easily as Roon works with both Sonosnet and Airplay 2. I just picked up a WiiM Ultra and connected it to an external DAC then connected that to my amp only to discover I push music to the WiiM via Roon but I cant group it with any of my other devices because the Ultra doesnt have Airplay 2. If I were to pick up a Bluesound Node or the new Icon, would I be able to make groupings using the Airplay 2 Protocol in the Sonos Devices and the Node Device? Anybody have any experiece with this?
You can group zones only using the same protocols. So any Roon Ready zone can group with any other RR device or Roon Bridge devices on pc’s. Airplay zones can be grouped with other Airplay zones, etc etc. You can’t mix protocols. I take it you have the Wiim Ultra as that’s the only Wiim sold without Airplay. If you have a Pro or Pro Plus then you can group with Sonos using Airplay.
So yes you can do what you want with Blusound or any other streaming dac that supports Airplay. Be aware when grouping Sonos by Airplay they no longer use Sonosnet and are at the mercy of your own WiFi network being up to scratch to handle multiple devices streaming.
