My Roon plus has failed and I’ve been without music for 4 months now. Can’t get parts or a replacement Roon plus in the UK, not new or second hand. The people who service my system have no alternatives to offer me.
I am visiting the US in 3 weeks - only for 3 days (San Francisco, for work). Can I buy a Roon Titan in person, whilst there - or have it delivered to me - then bring it back to the UK for use here? Will voltage etc be compatible?
Hi Mary I would be concerned with the warranty of the Titan as they are only being sold in the US at the moment, and there have been some issues with Titan’s and Nucleus One’s having some teething problems.
Can the people who service your gear not put you in touch with someone who could deliver you a good NUC running Rock or DietPi at a fraction of the price.
It’s a relatively simple process to follow and as long as you have backup’s of your previous Roon setup to restore you should be up and running again fairly quickly
You could also run Roon on a different computer (like a normal Windows or Mac machine) for the time being until the new Nucleus becomes available for purchase in UK
Buy in advance of arriving, and have it shipped to your office in SF and it’ll be waiting for you. Just let a coworker grab it for you in advance.
Yes, but you will need to use a plug adapter or buy a cable that goes from the power brick to UK plug. It should be no more than a few £.
You’ll get hit with import duties when your arrive in the UK.
Don’t import duties only apply if an item is sent by postal service or courier into the UK?
Sneaking through nothing to declare looking guilty ??? RISKY
Theoretically you have stuff to declare so you have declare it and pay
Why would you have to declare it? Doesn’t that apply to excise duty rather than import duty?
Not sure but I would think it applies to anything taxable , expert advise needed. I know I got pulled over into the declared zone when coming back to the UK once and they wanted to charge me for my cameras even though they were obviously not new
Risky at best … I wouldn’t try it coming into South Africa ![]()
No, that’s why every international airport has a „goods to declare“ lane
Been stopped multiple times and not just in the UK when carrying nice boxes
Thankfully most of those times I had nothing to declare ![]()
I think you’re correct on that one. I suppose it hinges on the difference between transporting and couriering. A new and boxed computer that has originated in the US could definitely look like couriering. Old cameras on the other hand… Hopefully you didn’t have to pay.
If someone travels from home to some other country and then back, carrying expensive stuff, it’s often advised to have copies of the original receipts. Especially if the age of a thing isn’t obvious.
Last winter, Austrian customs stopped and interrogated Arnold Schwarzenegger when he tried to enter the country with an expensive watch that he intended to auction for charity. He still had to pay the import taxes and customs duties.
Of course, if you are not Schwarzenegger one has a good chance not to be stopped in the „nothing to declare“ lane, so it’s a gamble
I am assuming he told them he’d be back ![]()
I think I must have the record , I was travelling back from Germany to UK , I had 3 x 1 kg bags of samples of beer stabilizer (Poly Vinyl Pyrrolidone) which is a pure white powder. All neatly laid out in my brief case !
I went through the Goods to Declare zone and said “you are not going to believe me BUT” . I had a pukka invoice as samples and they let me through. Try to look cool !!
Not declaring upon entry in the UK means paying the duty or forfeiting the item plus then a fine.
New Roon user here.
I tried to install Roon in my Asustor Nas without success…
Purchased a ‘new to me’ Intel NUC and had Roon running fine in an hour.
My front end is a Linn Klimax DS with latest dac/power upgrades, Roon is sounding very good thru’ my digital setup!![]()
My view is that you should just buy a NUC or a Mini PC in the UK and install either 1) ROCK or 2) RoonServer on Ubuntu Linux. I have a Beelink Mini PC with a core i5 running Roon server and it works well even with DSP and multiple zones. I also use a Synology NAS for music storage. What about your previously stored music is there a way to retrieve the files?
When they were a very new thing, I once imported a CD player from the Netherlands to Austria, by train in the overhead compartment. Customs agents took it away and I had to pick it up at the customs office a few days later. It took hours while they were paging through huge binders (they were like 30 cm high) that listed every conceivable electronics device, trying to figure out what this thing was. We eventually settled on record player. Suddenly it wasn’t so cheap as it had looked in NL.
