I use a M2 mini Mac for my core. My music is stored on a 2TB SSD external hard drive which is 100 gb away from full. So I’ve bought a 4TB SSD and intend to change. I am going to then use the old 2TB to store photos. The question I have is when I change to the new drive if I restore ROON from the last backup prior to installing the new drive will the latest activity list will remain or are the backups of the old drive?
Hi @Sestrian,
As you are only swapping out the external SSD (just music files), not the internal drive that also has macOS and Roon installed, there should be no requirement to restore a Roon backup.
That said, before any changes it would be prudent to make sure have more than one recent Roon backup.
When performing the SSD swap, I would follow these steps (note I’m not a Mac user so some interpretation may be required).
- Disable the Roon Watched folder (that’s monitoring the current external SSD).
- Stop Roon Server.
- Connect the new SSD, and copy over all the music files from the original SSD maintain the same folder names.
- Disconnect the old SSD.
- Rename the new SSD so it has same name / path as the old SDD.
- Restart Roon Server.
- Check the file path in the watched folder matches that of the new drive.
- Enable the watched folder.
Thank you, that makes sense and I will follow. I’ve already copied the music folder and checked that all have gone over. I have three copies of my music files and have checked that all three are identical. Not an easy task but worth it. Thanks once again.
Stuck to the method and it worked, all recent activity was spot on but, and it’s a big but, it seemed to keep adding the albums. I waited until it got to the point where it said I had three times the number of albums I actually had. So I was left with no choice but to remove the folder. Stop ROON, reboot the mini Mac and added the folder as new despite it having the same name as the old drive. This worked. Then I tried to restore from the backup I had made prior to doing the change. This almost worked but once again the albums kept adding. So I gave up, removed the folder, shut ROON and reopened, added the folder and the albums added again OK but I lost the recent activity. At least I now have the added extra storage.
