Excuse me, but am I correct in understanding that my request to change my username, together with my real name, was posted in a public topic after it was approved? I was a bit surprised, as I was hoping to keep my real name private, because once something is on the internet, it’s there forever.

You are correct, however, following your request your actually name is no longer visible.
