Cheapest DAP with ARC Support

Adopted the card into internal and now roon shows the SD card.

Fixed.

I never adopt as you can’t then manually add stuff outside of the DAP which is faster for transferring in bulk that using WiFi, moot for ARC though. I do only use it for other apps though not ARC ditched ARC it’s just not reliable enough. I have also never found it wholly reliable in the past to adopt storage on Android.

More importantly for me im not limited. I offline with Arc and stream on WiFi. The SD card is never coming out.

Good luck with downloads never worked properly for my on iPhone lost them all too many times.

Hi, @Paul_Whittaker.

If I’d gotten here earlier, I might have tried to discourage you from going down the M11S (or any FiiO) path. It’s hard to recommend ARC on a DAP. It’s hard to recommend ARC at all, but I find it particularly unsuited to a DAP.

I have an M11 Plus ESS which I use as a mobile Roon endpoint in my home. It’s great at that.

Outside my home, even when I’m able to find stable WiFi, it has issues playing bit perfect, and only download to offline from my personal library, and requires occasional resets which blow away anything I’ve downloaded. My iPhone is better at ARC but even that has issues.

I worry that if you bet on ARC on an M11S working at a wedding, you’ll have issues. That would be lousy.

I honestly think your phone - Android or iPhone - is a better bet and I’d make the bet on the download capabilities of some dedicated music player like Qobuz or Apple Music. If your stuff is in Roon, Soundiiz can help you get it over to that other player, that other player will be able to offline anything, and it’s likely to be there when you need it. If you want better sound quality, get a dongle DAC. Depending on your phone, you can get a USB-C or lightning dongle. If you are going to be using the phone for a while, chain two dongles, the first of which takes power in.

With regard to the FiiO, I wrote a post of setup tips (actually several) in this thread. Maybe you’ll find something useful:

Appreciate the feedback and I will be downloading music on Spotify also as a backup. Its not just a wedding its my wedding in fact so backup is key.

Its needed for Isle songs and wedding breakfast before the DJ takes over in the evening.

My phone was an option but its also my camera and how my guests will try to reach me so I cant use it.

The wedding is December 2nd so I may post a follow up, letting everyone know if it was a disaster.

Wow! Congratulations!! Whatever you do, I hope it goes flawlessly and that it’s a wonderful for you and your partner!

If you’re not familiar with Soundiiz, it might be worth a look - it’s a pretty decent strategy for syncing stuff across music services, including Roon.

Sincerely hope it’s a wonderful day!

Just wanted to add an update to this thread.

I think I’m a DAP convert and will be exploring this avenue further one day. I set my budget low as I didnt want to part with tue cash but I have been enjoying working from home with my DAP and a pair of 109 Pros instead of my office system.

Next budget is around ÂŁ3k, what do people recommend for a new years treat to myself?

Astell & Kern SP range looks beautiful.

A&K devices are divisive though I don’t think anyone would disagree with your assertion they are beautiful to look at. High prices are also an effective strategy for brand definition, and they certainly don’t fall short there.

On the flip side, it’s questionable whether the price is accompanied by a corresponding benefit to sound quality and the closed OS/upper bound on app installations is problematic. At least some of their devices are also known to be slow and laggy due to underpowered CPUs.

I bias towards devices built around open Android which enables installation of apps from the Google Play store and no cap on the number of installable apps. I would be in trouble without open Android because I do things like use VPN to connect to my home network, install a password manager, run Wavelet, UAPP, etc.

I’m very happy with my M11 Plus. I have a friend who loves his M15S. The M23, the update to the M11 Plus, was scheduled to ship this month so may be imminent. You might consider staying in the FiiO family, though the pull of the A&K devices is strong. I think their marketing is outstanding

I would go up the Fiio range myself they have really shown the market how do things. I tried an A&K Kann Alpha which was ÂŁ400 more than the M11 Plus it sounded ok nothing spectacluar, its wifi was so unreliable it went back and Roon Ready was flakey. I got the M11 Plus a few months later after it got Roon Ready status and never been happier, the flexibility of its great something you want get with A&K and dont be fooled by their prices equaling better SQ. I imagine the M17 is as good as any of their flagship models.

Beauty I guess is in the eye of the beholder I really dont like A&K design much.

Whichever I go with I will be sure to do plenty research and will post here.

Thank you everyone for your guidance.

The M17 sounds sublime, and can drive almost anything.

It’s a ‘brick, and is heavy and ‘clunky’ compared to the best that A&K & Sony can offer.

But VFM is through-the-roof IMO. And Roon implementation is perfect.

As nobody trusts Arc here I used Spotify for wedding background music, worked a treat.

I use Arc on a Fiio R7 via usbc out to feed a MYTEK Brooklyn Bridge in my office system (remote). Best way I’ve found to access my Roon Core in my (remote) office. No more need for 2 Roon subscriptions and the impossible task of keeping the content in synch.

This M11S is so hit and miss with Roon on WiFi. Business grade WiFi I add.

This is in your home on the same network and vlan as your Roon server?

My M11 Plus is flawless on my home WiFi (UniFi, numerous access points). Never a hiccup including roaming between APs. Is your network similar and, if so, have you been able to figure out if the issues are caused by roaming, signal strength, or something else?

Yeah at home using the roon app. I have 2 U6 LR’s myself with immaculate coverage.

I will have to investigate further.

Please don’t take any suggestions I make as condescending - It’s clear you’re highly competent. I’m just including things to give you a couple of things to investigate if you want to spend the time.

When you run the Roon app on the M11S, you have the option of enabling “This Phone > Default Output”. If the “Roon Ready” app on the phone is also running, you additionally have the option of enabling the Roon Ready zone of the phone. What you want to be doing here is disabling the Default Output, running the Roon Ready app and enabling that output, and then choosing that as the zone. Is that what you’re doing?

If you’re playing to Default Output, then switching to Roon Ready is the first thing to do and may very will fully address your issues. If you’re already doing this, then playing around with UniFi might help.

Make sure you have the latest UniFi firmware or choose an earlier (or even release candidate) firmware that avoids or fixes issues. For example, there’s at least one Gen6 specific release candidate in the pipeline: https://community.ui.com/releases/UniFi-Access-Point-6-6-56/42486d2c-92c8-4b13-bc37-da645fe62d9b

If you have the UniFi Network app on an iPhone or Android, you can turn on notifications that fire when a device roams between APs. This would help you at least figure out if roaming is related to what you’re seeing. If it is, you can try adjusting settings like “BSS Transition” and “Fast Roaming”.

Worst case, you can create a WiFi network that is limited to just one of your APs and see if it’s strong enough across your home to just work. It might be.

Maybe something here helps.

I have the plus but for me rock solid on my ac lites and u6 lite, doesn’t drop a beat anywhere in the house or office.
