Chromecast not displaying artist, album, or track on TA-AN1000 (ref#4HUH6E)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· Chromecast: no artist, album or track displayed on TV connected to Chromecast device Sony TA-AN1000

Tell us about your home network

· Roon Rock, TA-AN1000 and Roon control clients are all in same subnet. Roon Rock is virtualized on Proxmox infrastructure on an Intel NUC10i7.

Hey @defisit ,

Running Roon in a VM or Docker is not an officially supported environment. It is considered Tinkering. Roon doesn’t prevent customers from experimenting with our software in unsupported environments; however, when you do so, you also take on the ongoing support and troubleshooting for that environment.

We wanted to provide a brief explanation before moving this [thread/post] to the Tinkering section. Hopefully, other customers who may also be using your environment can help you with diagnosing and resolving your issue.

If this does not work for you, then I would recommend running Roon in an officially supported environment for the stability and support you are looking for.

Thanks.

Hello, thanks for the response and moving my issue to the ‘ tinkering’ section.

Can you also please point me to the documentation where it states that ROCK is not officially supported on virtualized infrastructure even when the physical hardware below it is? In my case the Intel NUC10i7FNx. I wasnt able to find that.

I understand vendors can’t support everything thats out there, but my instance has been running perfectly with just a default VM configuration with Rock (appliance) on supported NUC hardware. I have purchased a TA-AN1000 receiver with Roon in mind and the only thing that isn’t working is the issue as explained. With Airplay 2, the artist, album, track and album art is correctly displayed on the TV. Not sure where to look to get this fixed.

Thank you,

John.

Hi @defisit,

In the Official ROCK Install Guide and the ROCK Hardware Requirements, Roon states:

Any hardware configurations other than the [specific NUC models] listed above are unsupported. Although they may work now, they may also stop working at any time due to updates."

The issue you’re seeing with the Sony TA-AN1000 and AirPlay 2 is almost certainly a multicast/mDNS discovery issue caused by the virtualization layer.

When you run ROCK in a VM, your network traffic has to pass through a virtual bridge or vSwitch. These bridges often “clip” or delay multicast packets just enough to let the audio stream through (which is buffered) but cause the metadata/handshake (which is real-time) to fail.

If you’d like to continue troubleshooting in a supported setup, we’d be happy to help. Otherwise, we’ll go ahead and move things over to Tinkering.

Thanks for understanding @defisit!

Hello, thanks for the response!

The issue is not with Airplay 2, that is working fine with the TA-AN1000 as mentioned including Album art being displayed. The issue I wrote about is with (native) Chromecast on the TA-AN1000 and the ‘unknown artist’ and ‘unknown album’ that is displayed on the TV screen (see included pictures) when playing audio. ‘Roon’ is being displayed on the TA-AN1000’s own display so for that part i can see that Roon is function as it see’s that as a valid source. Music is playing fine.

For the (virtual) networking part, I would have to check the vendor documentation if by default certain traffic is filtered or gets a different priority even dropping traffic. I’m not convinced but that something for me to find out.

Thanks!

John.

Hello Benjamin? You suggested to move this topic to the tinkering section? When will that be done? Else the topic will be lost correct?

I’ve moved the thread to Tinkering for you.
