Classical music ? Apple on a desktop is average, but Qobuz/Roon is great

When I finally made the last step into the Apple environment by changing my desktop from a Windows 10 PC to MacOS Mac mini M2, I thought it to be a good idea to make the step complete and ditch Qobuz/Roon in favour of Apple Music.

Boy that was a mistake that I regretted very soon. Though the MacOS Music app is much better in organising than the IPhone/IPad app (favourites in Album view, something that still lacks in Roon but I used the tags for that), the music quality is not top notch. At the start of many tracks there are one or more stutters (buffering issues in MacOs 14 as my connection is glass fibre and very high), some older albums do not want to play gapless (a must for opera and the likes) and with a growing number of favourites the mobile apps did not want to load them anymore, making it all useless.

Last week I changed back to Qobuz and then also to Roon and my music sounds great again. There is a detectable difference in sound picture between Apple and Qobuz for almost every album I listen to (also with High Res albums). Though I am not blessed anymore with speakers, I still try to make something of it thru a FiIO DAC and Beyerdynamic DT900 Pro X for classical and a DT 770 Pro for popular music.

Now that Roon is getting an overhaul in the playlist department (see Early Access, which I use), the price for the Qobuz/Roon combo (still not much more than 1 or 2 CDs per month) is worth it. No problem with the people at Cupertino, but they let MacOS lack behind when it comes to the Apple Music app and their music selection is more oriented towards the general audience and not specialised group like classical music. They have a few labels that Qobuz only partially has (Orange Mountain Music, Philip Glass, to name one) but I am happy to do without them for the overall better quality of the sound and the selection. Also there are many older albums that you can not find on Apple Music. Roon is a great addition as a luxurious front-end for the Qobuz app, which, I agree, is lacking in functions.

I know this are all subjective and is my personal opinion, but for undisturbed, good sounding classical music I would go with Qobuz and (optionally) Roon. I am glad that I kept a copy of my local library in unaltered FLAC format and only converted a part of the library to Apple Music M4A. The fact that Qobuz includes the booklets for many of the albums in the streaming service (and thus in Qobuz) is also an added benefit. Not so very important for some genres, but a great addition for classical music.

So much for my addition to the discussion.
