Classical subgenres lacking

Roon is lacking when it comes to Classical subgenres. In addition to the current ones (Chamber Music, Opera, etc.) I don’t understand why there is no Baroque for example. I have a huge collection of ancient music and I would really appreciate subgenres like Baroque, Renaissance, Medieval and so on.

Hi @Gustavo_Gabaldon.

This may not be what you want, but Roon regards “Baroque”, “Renaissance”, “Medieval” etc. as Periods, not Genres. At the moment, focusing on “Period” is available within the “Compositions” browser. This may, of course, be extended in the future.

@joel - thanks for pointing this out, but it raises a question. I notice that in the list of periods for my collection, I have the period “21st Century”, but not “20th Century”.

Is this because Roon doesn’t recognise “20th Century” as a period?

I certainly have compositions that were composed in the 20th Century. Is there some way I can tag them to create a “2oth Century” period? Thanks.

Ah - OK - I see how to do it - set it in the Composition editor… Simples.
On the other hand - should I be using “Modern” as the period instead?

Hi @Geoff_Coupe. I actually have a single (non-classical) composition which has “20th Century” as the Period, so it certainly exists in the metadata. Unfortunately, it all comes down to what metadata we’ve been provided with for compositions.

Thanks for pointing that out, Joel. I was unaware of that. Cheers

It would be great if Period can be specified for Albums instead of only Composers and Compositions.

I hear you. It is very unlikely that period will be added to the data model for albums. However, filtering of albums based on their containing compositions with period X might be possible in the future.

I understand the challenges of labeling a whole album with a period, say, a classical album with compositions of various periods but, same as now we can show albums based on genres like alternative, experimental, etc., they could be broadly labeled as belonging to a certain period?
