As my Windows 10 Roon server nears end-of-life, I’m considering switching to one of the Linux-based options, either a Ubuntu machine, a NUC with ROCK, or the entry-model Nucleus. My current server backs up both my music collection and my Roon database to OneDrive for no extra cost. Reading through the posts here, the only cloud backup options I see mentioned are to either purchase a DropBox subscription ($120/year) or run a separate box that backs up to another cloud service. (I already have tons of cloud storage with OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud, and even Adobe.)
The whole thing depends on whether you will use an Ubuntu machine or a ROCK/Nucleus. It also depends a bit on where your music files will be stored.
Generally, if you use Ubuntu you can use all kinds of backup solutions for Linux or create your own if you prefer. With ROCK/Nucleus you will need a separate machine to handle backups. (You can use the built-in Dropbox but it only backs up the Roon database, not the music files, so you could probably get away with the free Dropbox account.)
Thanks for the quick reply! I’m familiar with the Roon database backups, and I do daily database backups to both of the drives in my server and a monthly backup to OneDrive. It’s been a few years since I tried it, but as I recall, my database was too big for the free Dropbox to be useful. Do you know if there is a Ubuntu client for OneDrive that’s reliable enough for this?
How do you back up your music files? Can’t you back up your Roon database backup in the same way?
I’m not sure about the state of Linux OneDrive these days, but the German-language ubuntuusers.de wiki, which is usually very reliable and current, lists these options:
