Consolidating ROCK internal and external storage

I have a NUC running ROCK. It has 2TB of internal storage and 2TB of external USB storage with >10k albums.

I’ve just bought a new 4TB SSD and wish to consolidate all my music data on to this and make it the internal storage drive. What’s the recommended procedure for doing this?

Thanks - but consolidation is different from a straightforward move - you are bringing multiple storage locations together and I’m looking for specific advice on that and how best to merge the data

Why is it different? You just follow the exact same steps.

That article gives you the essential steps, and can be simply adapted for your consolidation.

First, you will need to copy the current content of your Internal Storage SSD to a holding location (e.g. on a PC or Mac.

Do steps 1 and 2 of the article.

In step 2 you will disable the current Internal Storage (Settings > Storage > ROCK Internal Storage > 3 dots menu > Disable) and Remove the external USB.

Power down your ROCK/NUC and exchange the internal 2TB SSD for the 4TB SSD.

Power up and format the 4TB SSD using ROCK’s Web Administration page, then carry on following step 3 of the article.

In step 4, you will move/copy the content of your holding location and the external USB drive to the 4TB drive to consolidate your content. Copying of your USB will be faster if you connect it to your PC or Mac (because the files will just move once over the network).

Do step 5, and step 6 is not (I think) necessary, because the Internal Storage is already added and should be enabled by default when you formatted the 4TB drive. But if it is showing as disabled, it can be enabled using the “3 dots” menu.

Those steps might work but given I’m swapping out SSDs then surely a clone process would be far faster?

I can work it out for myself but was hoping there was a best practice workflow rather than some generic instructions that can be adapted.

Nope - you must use Roon OS to format the disc first.

Why wouldn’t cloning the disk be an option?

Well, you can try it AYOR, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Roon OS won’t like it since you’re moving from a 2TB to a 4TB SSD.
