Cost of disk storage

When I went to install my 10 TB drive the other day, I found that my computer didn’t have spare SATA connectors so I bought some cables from Amazon. Didn’t know which cable would fit nicely in the case, so I bought a few different packages. $26 for the cables, just a little less than the cost per terabyte.

Strange times.

I spent over 40+ years in IT type work going from huge IBM platters that had MB of storage for mainframes to my last 10 years working with Enterprise disk arrays and SSD’s for LSI/Seagate. What we buy for our computers is slow storage but has large capacities. The enterprise disks are much smaller but much faster. Same goes for SSD’s. We buy consumer SSD’s whereas enterprise SSD’s are many times more $$$. Consumer SSD aren’t as fast and won’t last as long since they don’t have the over provisioning that commercial SSD’s can have.

That said consumer drives are much less stressed than enterprise.

Backups still apply however in both use case scenarios…sadly consumers seem to close one eye and cross fingers for backups
