Devialet Phantom 108dB Owners Share Your Setup & Streaming Preferences

Hi everyone,

I recently got a pair of Devialet Phantom 108dB speakers and I’m curious to hear from other Phantom owners here. I’d love to understand your experience and setup choices better.

A few questions for you:

How long have you been using your Phantom 108dB speakers?

What’s your current music source – Apple Music, Roon + Tidal, Qobuz, or something else?

If you’ve compared Apple Music with Roon/Tidal, which one do you feel brings out the best sound quality on the Phantoms?

Do you use MQA or hi-res streaming, and does it make a noticeable difference?

Any tweaks, settings, or configurations you recommend for getting the most out of the Phantoms?

Are you using them in stereo pair, solo, or as part of a home theater setup?

Finally, do you feel Roon’s cost is justified for Phantom owners, or is Apple Music/other services good enough?

I’m trying to decide on the best long-term streaming setup for these speakers, so real-world feedback from experienced Phantom users would be super helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Chandrashekar,

I recently sold my stereo pair of Phantom I 108dBs (bought 2017, so a quite early pair) as I have ordered a pair of Phantom Ultimates.

Mine worked well on Spotify, but I had problems streaming anything (CD-resolution or high resolution) from Qobuz or Tidal, either directly or via Roon. The audio would cut out intermittently or stop playing altogether. This never happened with Spotify connect. This was using a Wifi connection, which I had done everything I could to optimize. I had a dedicated wifi network and VLAN for the Phantoms and the AP (UniFi U7 Lite) was no more than 3m away with line-of-sight to both of them. I have spoken with several Phantom owners who have not had these issues however so it may have simply been the age of my units, which only supported Wifi 4.

I haven’t tried Apple Music so I can’t comment. Nor was it feasible to connect the Phantoms via wired ethernet so I can’t comment there either.

I would definitely say Roon’s cost is justified as long as the Phantoms work with it reliably, which I assume newer models do. As you probably know Roon doesn’t work with Spotify which was my only stable option.

I’ll report back with experience with my new Ultimates which have just been delivered.

keen to hear how the Phantom Ultimates are doing with roon

Very happy. No stability issues at all streaming any resolution of material from Qobuz, TIDAL or local rips via Roon. Spotify Connect is also working fine on all resolutions.

I am also very pleased with the SQ, although as I posted elsewhere the Ultimates are set up in a long wall configuration on Tree stands (about 3m apart and 0.8m from rear wall, not close to any side walls), whereas the Golds were on the short wall in the same room on deep window sills with glass directly behind them. So not a level playing field.
