Did I buy the wrong NUC?

I just bought a NUC10i3FNK off Ebay for a good price. I meant to buy the h version so I could use the SAMSUNG 870 QVO SATA III SSD 1TB 2.5 I had already purchased. Stupid, I know. Does anyone know if I got a Akasa fanless case would I be able to use the SATA SSD or does the NUC board not have the connection and hence even a new case wouldn’t help? If that’s the situation I guess I have no choice but to sell something I haven’t even yet received which would be a big bummer. Thanks. Jon

Looks like you’re out of luck.

You can buy an external case for your 1TB SSD and connect thru a USB port.

That’s what I thought until I saw this Build Process - Akasa Turing Fanless Case Review: Unrivalled Noiseless NUC

Yeah, a little ambiguous. Here’s something on the board itself, rather than the implementation.

The way I read it, the i3 version (unlike the i5/i7 versions) doesn’t allow more than an HDD.

You could always take it apart and look at the connectors, I guess.

When you boot the machine and go into the BIOS, what do you see?

I don’t get it till friday. I noticed as soon as i paid for it my mistake. I prefer not to take it apart. It’s still new in box and would rather sell it that way if necessary.
I am definitely no expert, hence the posted question, but p16 and 26 of the document you posted to me seems like it might be possible. The akasa kit comes with a SATA data and power cables. Perhaps the only thing stopping the short form factor NUC from accepting it is the lack of space?

Yeah, the board layout on page 16 would seem to show the necessary connectors, but the chart on page 4 implies otherwise.

Maybe someone will come along who has actual experience with the board, rather than just on line documentation.

BTW, a drive in a $20 external USB case is just as good performance wise as an internal drive. Some people prefer external drives, in that they are easy to transfer music to, rather than over a network.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help!

I haven’t worked on a 10G NUC, but the 7G and 8G boards both have the SATA and power ports you need regardless of the case Intel used.

The relevant Akasa cases that have space for drives come with the cables and mounting hardware required.

I would be surprised if this wasn’t the case with a 10G - but I haven’t built one.

Thanks Greg. Looks like it’s not a total loss. Either, I upgrade the case to the Akasa as I wanted to anyways as the NUC has to be in my listening room/living room or I get an external USB case which although cheaper and perhaps easier to use gives my aesthetic sensibilities heartache.

I’m a fan of Akasa cases.

I don’t think there is a low profile Plato for the 10th G, but the Turing is certainly available.

I’ve always assumed this to be the case, and I also assume the H and K versions share the same board. My interpretation of page iv is that they share the same board, with the differentiating features referring to things other than the board.

Make sure you get the correct model. And just FYI about a report of power button not touching:

Just hide both units , the NUC is compact but hardly a “sexy” addition to your hi fi.

Add to that with ROCK installed there’s no need to touch the NUC once setup, you can even tell it to restart in the case of a power cut then power restore . That’s how mine is configured

Thanks everyone for the helpful comments.

On a somewhat tangent, the NUC arrived. I purchased it NEW on ebay but there was no shrinkwrap and some of the bags weren’t sealed. On the otherhand, the sticker closing the ethernet port is still on. Thoughts before I respond to the seller?

Under those circumstances I think eBay would help in arranging a return if the seller refuses. Then you can buy the model you first intended.
