DietPi - Roon server - Some questions

So is it working now?

I have had it change names in the past, maybe when the TV was on when the device was booted up. I could never get it consistent enough to understand it. But I think that is HDMI0

Yeah detecting something connected and altering the name.

Yes and as my TV is rarely on when I boot the device it doesn’t normally change the name

Yes  After removing the HDMI cable to the television and doing a reboot (DietPi) than it shows HDMI0.

Happy new year

That’s one of the thing’s that was happening with mine originally that I could not remember :man_facepalming:, if the HDMI was plugged in and the TV was on at power on it changed names and caused confusion.

Good news that you have it all working now👍

Hopefully there is good information and pointers here for those who follow in your footsteps

Audirvana Studio seems not to be part of the DietPi-Software. But there seems to be Linux version.

Will Audirvana be implemented as a part of DietPi-Software, like Roon and Plex.

Have a great WE

Torben

If there is a version for Debian then it can be installed using the apt package manager from the command line

They might well add it to the DietPi system in future as well to make it even easier

It looks like this is the download you want
https://audirvana.com/delivery/AudirvanaLinux.php?product=studio&arch=amd64&distrib=deb

You can manually install the Debian x64 version, but I could not get it to work on mine. The remote app would not see it at all… But they could never answer me as to why so I never got passed demo stage or beta before that.

Got it working on my NAS though but it was so slow not worth it. But it gave me a taste and it’s not great.

@Torben_Rick it seems I was missing a dependency to get Audirvana working. You have to install Avahi daemon which is in Dietpi software.

Unfortunately it won’t run as a service at all only manually so needs some investigation.

And sorted had to remove one line of code in the service it sets up and now it’s running.

Can’t say I’m impressed though. It’s a clunky UI and not good for multi zone setups. Plex or LMS best it

Thanks, than I will wait. Maybe it will added to the DietPi system in future.

The only “problem” with Plex: Qobuz is not an integrated part of Plex. Either is Tidal anymore.

Torben

Right now I am trying to find information about JPLAY integration with DietPi :frowning:

JPLAY: “It combines Qobuz, Tidal and local content in a single interface allowing user to access each library separately.”

Torben

Jplay is just an iOS app there isn’t anything else to run on a server it’s just a UPnP controller app that’s all and and overpriced one at that. Don’t believe the hype it sounds the same as Roon or LMS etc to me or on any system. It’s integration is poor you only get extra metadata for streaming your own files have nothing. You also still need a UPnP/dnla server such as minimserver or asset running on your network to use it for your own music. You also have to manually do rescans when adding music.

Let the ears do the talking  Comparative listening Roon / HQPplayer vs JPlay / HQPlayer. I don’t know about Roon vs Jplay without HQP.

It doesn’t use ffmpeg at all for this so your barking up the wrong tree. Ffmpeg is only used for AAC or MP3 conversions. And Roon is purely a controller app the same as jplay in this scenario it doesn’t touch the audio it’s all done via HQplayer.

Qobuz plugin with LMS works perfectly.
As long as your music is tagged properly it works.

The Linux version was launched only a few months ago. So it probably has it’s own teething issues.

If you consider Audirvana Studio , do an deep trial before you spend money. I am coming to the end of a one year sub and will not be repeating. I have barely used it

It is no match for Roon ,the UI is a mess things like [ArtistSort] . For example I have one artists , Alfred Brendel that shows under 8 headings depending upon whether he is solo or in ensemble. Each combination shows as a separate Artist and to fix means editing [ArtistSort] by ALBUM in a very klunky editor This despite the Tags being set correctly. Some under A some under B . So finding anything is nightmare.

Also it’s single zone , you can switch but one at a time, it looks like it was designed for a PC->DAC implementation originally.

Yeah I’ve removed it already as its horrible experience feels very outdated and it’s slow and this is on a very snappy 11i7.

Artist images are not and taken from your album covers. Having to go into settings to change a zone to play as well is badly thought out.

I agree it’s still firmly stuck in the world of being an app you use on pc directly connected to a dac.
