Do I still need to pay a Roon subscription even if I’m not using music services?

I’m totally new to this Roon thing.

I heard you can make a streamer using Roon ROCK and a NUC.

Only question I have is do I still need to pay a Roon subscription even if I’m not using music services?

And if I do use a music service such as Qubuz, won’t I just be paying the Qobuz subscription or will I also have to pay Roon’s subscription.

Sorry for the naive questions. Like I said, I’m new to this.

Hi John and welcome, yes, you can use a NUC And ROCK to make an excellent Roon core and many of us do that.

However, in order to use Roon with all of its fantastic features you will have to sign up for a subscription plan. This will be the case if you are using a local library, a streaming service, or a combination of the two.

If you decide that Roon is for you, ask as many questions as you need and we will attempt to answer them and support you through the set up of your system.

To dip the toe you don’t need to spend too much. All that you need is a computer with a decent processor , an SSD for say Windows that will hold the database, some space for a few tunes and a connection to your Hi fI

Presuming you have an internet connection and router then connect the PC by ethernet and you are good to go and evaluate Roon. Warning it can become addictive !!

I originally used my general desktop computer before moving some years later to a dedicated NUC

The NUC ROCK route is “an” end situation. A NUC with the ROCK OS installed provides a compact self managing server for Roon

You need to subscribe to Roon to use Roon after the trial period in any situation . The subscription is to cover the development of the software as you get it , its continued development as it never stands still adding new features and functionality and as it cover its use and hosting of cloud services to help pay for the rights, manage and maintain a lot of its core functionality with regard to metadata. A constant internet connection is required for Roon to function.

You can use Roon with just a local library of music or if you do subscribe to one of the music services it supports you can also add that into Roon so it becomes part of your library like any local file. This subscription is with you and the chosen service and is completely separate to Roons subscription.
