Just got the new and improved directstream DAC MKII. I don’t yet have a streamer. Is it the case that Roon doesn’t “see” the DAC until I have a streamer plugged in?

You have to physically connect the MKII either to a streamer or directly to whatever machine is running your Roon Core. USB connection seems to be best for the MKII, but there are lots of opinions about that.
Minor correction @David_Roberts. The DS MK2 can be connected to the Core via USB, or any other PC, Mac, or Linux computer (Raspberry Pi included, and other network streamers) running Roon Bridge, or for PCs and Macs, the Roon Remote with full GUI. It probably may also work with an Android or iOS Remote with the appropriate cable/dongle combination.
