Does Roon work on Android-based DAPs?

If I got an Android-based DAP (any… iBasso, HiBy, etc.), could I download the Android Roon app from the google play store onto that DAP and then play Roon on that DAP (when I’m on home network)?

I sometimes use my iPad at home to stream Roon to it (and play to headphones via external DAP/Amp connected to the iPad), and I am wondering whether the same would be possible to achieve with Roon streaming to an Android Roon app that is installed on an Android DAP, so I can listen of that DAP to a headphone while controlling what I’m listening using a Roon app that is installed on that DAP.

sorry for the basic question… thanks!

I once tried this and it ran but the resolution was such that it was very hard to use. The screen size of the DAP I used made it really hard to read and control Roon. It was a while ago and I don’t even remember which DAP I used for this. So yes it ?works? but…

I eventually just used my phone to an iFi xCAN and called it a day.

that’s the debate I’m having really… thanks for the input!

it’s 2025 and in my experience no, it doesn’t work. 2 things stand out: It must remain the foreground app or it crashes and it completely bypasses Android audio and you’d think this is a good thing except it also bypasses the bit-perfect path the DAP makers work so hard to provide systemwide. It also requires the screen stay on which largely defeats the battery. In a word, it’s sh*t.

I don’t even get as far with ARC. Sign-in is accepted but it simply loops back to sign-in saying my session expired.

Not worth the trouble when the native apps work so perfectly! Qobuz and Radio Paradise for me.

Roon Ready DAPs from FiiO work very well indeed. But these don’t need the Android App unless you want local control. They act like any other RR endpoint.

Roon Arc works for me flawlessly on the Hiby R4 but stopped working on the Astell and Kern SR35 after the latest update.
