A friends is about to install Ubiquiti UniFi Access and my question is would it be possible to have the door bell (Chime) be played on the network speakers with the help of Roon? My hope was if it would be possible to get a Webhook for this function or will this just remain a dream of mine?
You could probably rig something up using Home Assistant via the Unifi and Roon integrations so that a track in Roon was triggered to play when the doorbell rang.
But to be honest that sounds like a missed parcel delivery just waiting to happen, why not just buy a UniFI chime?
The chime is the alternative. But you are correct. That could be a alternative. but that would require at least 3 PoE chimes and they don’t look great. Would prefer to only have the in-wall speakers. But HASS/Homey is not something i would like to be dependent on. There is also a notification on the phone within UniFi Protect but a Chime on Roon would be a better alternative i think.
It would also require Roon to keep playing the music after if there is music playing.
But like you said it could be a total miss. To bad Roon does not have High-Availability.
UniFi make a WiFi Chime too, plugs straight into a wall socket.
btw. not that I can’t see the use for a built-in chime in Roon, particularly one that lowered the music volume while chiming. However I can’t see Roon wanting to get bogged down in discussions over which doorbells to support, which Roon zones should chime, at what volume and even what the chime sound itself should be. It’s just not a feature that’s going to significantly increase subscriber numbers.
But I guess no harm in opening a feature suggestion and voting for it.
The functionality and API is there if you really wanted to build it yourself, you’d just need to store your chime sounds in a Roon watched folder. I can certainly see how such an extension could work and what the config screen might look like. But it would probably take some effort to get it to work smoothly and if it didn’t work reliably then you’d probably end up not using it.
The original author of the Home Assistant roon integration was looking to provide this sort of functionality.
But there are some limitations of the roon api that made it less that ideal (eg you can’t interrupt a playing endpoint to play an announcement and the return to the music).
In the end he went to start developing his own alternative which you can find here:
It includes announcement functionality
btw. there’s a feature suggestion open here for the necessary API changes to support this properly, no harm is adding you vote to it.
(..although realistically, the only way I can see this happening in the next six months is if a Roon staffer moves house and decides they want to add support for announcements via Roon in their new home
)
