DSD playback on Lumin: Muse settings

I have Roon ROCK installed on an Intel NUC, connected through a network switch to my two Lumins. I am new to customisation. I configured settings (on both the Lumin app and Muse) to convert all streamed music to DSD. However, when I click on the "green"dot next to the stream, I see DSD being converted to 176.4 kHz PCM. Is this right? Have I got something wrong? Here are screen shots of settings on the two devices (Lumin and Roon ROCK).

For DSD digital output to an external DAC, you must disable Volume Control in Lumin app. (This restriction is not applicable to Lumin with analog output via internal DAC). Note that this will cause your DAC to output full volume - you may need to adjust the DAC gain or preamp volume accordingly.

Please also disable Lumin re-sampling since you’re using Roon DSP engine.

I turned off both volume control and Lumin re-sampling, and selected the DSD customised setting in Roon. There’s just a hiss from my speakers with the music barely audible. I turned the Lumin volume control on and the hiss disappeared. Music played better at a lower volume than before. The Lumin display says PCM is being converted to DSD.

This means the DAC is not recognizing the DSD data properly, or it may not support DSD at all.

What is the brand and model of your DAC?

This forces conversion to PCM for digital output. You DAC is not playing DSD.

Thanks. That explains it. The DAC I have connected to my Lumin U1 is a Sonnet Morpheus R2R. It doesn’t support DSD. The other setup I have (with a Lumin U2) uses a Chord MScaler and Chord Hugo TT2, both of which accept the format. It works fine in this setup.

You should not upsample to DSD for Chord products (unless you heard a sound effect that you really prefer after doing this). They convert the DSD back to PCM. Generally, you should keep PCM music native without upsampling before feeding it to Chord.
