an icon that would display when an album is a duplicate similar to things like LIVE, BOOTLEG or COMPILATION indicators.

YES, i agree. this is necessary.
there exist already an icon:
it would be usefull that the same icon is present on the cover when browsing all albums of an artist…
There wasn’t in 2016 when I posted this an icon shown in the album image like live (red dot) is. Now we at least have a versions indication but still nothing in the album browser
