Featured two subwoofer output ports, the DMP-A10 allows you to connect single or dual subwoofers as needed, or even disable the subwoofer function. MIXER and STEREO modes can be switched with ease, independent adjustments of subwoofer gain, crossover frequency, and delay are available as well.
(*Subwoofer function is only available for PCM signals below 192KHz.)
So I feed my A10 via the USB-B in sourcing from a NAA via ROON and HQP. When I do this, I receive no subwoofer output at all. I have checked every setting I can think of including the DSP setting and setting up the HPF and LPF and still nothing.
I have a REL sub attached to the A10 via the RCA sub-woofer outs and works fine when “Internal Player” is selected, USB-B in, no sub via the RCA subwoofer outs.
I have an A8 as well, but that is setup differently where I am talking the output from the AMP full range to the REL via their umbilical cord and setting the LPF in the REL.
Am I missing something in the A10 or is this by design? One of the reasons I purchased the A10 was to leverage the subwoofer outs but seems that only applies to “Internal Player.”
Also, if I scale w/ in ROON only, either PCM or DSD, same behavior, no sub out. Lastly, playing any native DSD file, no sub out.
Where I am disconnected, ROON does the scaling and sends the stream to the A10 and the A10 should play the stream as if it was a native file at higher bitrate? I realize not a HQP issue, just asking…

In here I think, there is IMHO a serious question about using HQPlayer in such a system, because you’ll use in every case a DSP from the DMP-A10 and DAC upsampling, without seeing metadatas on the display…
I think I am following, are you saying using HQP to up sample to the A10, that the A10 will still apply DSP when DSP is disabled in the A10 or are you saying just a lack of metdata such as album art etc.? If so, yes, that is the same experience I see with the A8.
It’s both.
Using HQPlayer with a streamer in which NAA isn’t included, reduces the device to an ordinary DAC.
If then you can’t use HQPlayer (you can only use up to PCM 24/192) to upsample to an optimal rate (like DSD256 or DSD512) for this DAC, then HQPlayer doesn’t makes much sense for me here.
Given the behaviour regarding the subwoofer output, I don’t think it performs DSP for PCM inputs higher than 192k, or any DSD inputs. Apart from what the DAC chip possibly does.
Of course it functions only as a DAC in such case.
If the streamer part would have HQPlayer NAA support, it would be more flexible, as it could display metadata, cover images and such. Although not when using Roon as source to HQPlayer (or realtime audio inputs such as ADC, S/PDIF or USB for that matter).
it’s off topic here (all the android based streamers doesn’t have NAA included), but for interest:
Are there any NAA clients out, which are showing metadatas? Is it possible to use your NAA image for RPi 4 (or 5) and show metadatas on the official (old or new) RPi display?
Not yet at least, but the feature was requested by couple of manufacturers.
I’ve had some thoughts about adding such display output feature to the NAA OS, but it is still on my TODO-list. Not particularly big or complex thing to do, but it has some related technical details involved, as I don’t want a full desktop environment running on a NAA.
