Fiber and Better Cables Make a Big Difference

And you know how? You probably have never tried the fiber route! Probably haven’t bought a cable that costs more than $5. Probably never held an i2s cable in your hand nor has a dac that includes this interface.

So until you have tried these options yourself, you have no reason to state any opinion.

I haven’t been run over by a lorry but I bet it hurts like hell!!!

It’s not that difficult. ABX test - Wikipedia

What’s the purpose of life, right? We can wax philosophical all we want, but I’m sure everyone has a pretty good idea about what’s possible and what’s not. We don’t have to be 100% sure, do we? We just have to be realistic.

A lot of people did try various nonsense (like the I2S scam, or expensive cables) and can confirm, both with properly evaluated subjective impressions and measurements, that no, this is nonsense that make no difference.

On the other hand people have no idea about how electricity works, because they had never studied any sciences, and believe that “if someone sells a USB betterizer it must mean that USB is bad” is a logical conslusion… well, anyone with some basic education in logic can very safely conclude that their opinions on any subject are not worth anything…

If I spent $1400 for two ethernet cables I would think they sound better too. Otherwise, I would have to admit to myself (and my wife) I just wasted $1400.

If I braid and accent my hair like that will my system sound better?

During my working life, I had this framed on my desk

Lord Kelvin:

When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind."
*(From his 1883 lecture on “Electrical Units of Measurement”.)

The point is from a certain perspective like throwing a fortune after e.g. cables for digital transmission and claiming “sounds much better” is…

  1. … misleading because not the sound quality got much better but the individually perceived experience which results in a complete delusion as discussed earlier.
  2. … telling us nothing about audio at all but gives misleading suggestions that changing an Ethernet cable may improve something like sound quality.
  3. … is not just biassed, it is in its words totally false because the cable obviously changed nothing but the individual experience, not any kind of sound quality at all.
  4. … as a whole mixing up sound quality with individual delusion.
  5. … is totally fine to be enjoyed individually but not for a rather honest and reasonable discussion about audio.

If it’s all just about a fancy look or the strong conviction to have something really good or even only about impressing others, then you should name it like that but not “sound quality”.

If it’s actually about not knowing the mechanisms behind delusion and G.A.S., it’d be rather easy to learn new things about audio and yourself :slightly_smiling_face:

And no one shall feel offended by the word delusion. It’s a totally natural process within our brains which are by far not perfect.

100% yes, guaranteed

Is $1400 for 2 cables is a lot of money? It’s 1% of what my overall system costs.

I think that’s a comment best used when you spend some real money on audio gear, middling stuff is average at best!

Galvanic isolation and “better” cables are solutions - like so many other HiFi gadgets too - for very specific “problems”. The noticeable effect (or lack of) therefore depends on the existence of the relevant problem in the first place. Problems in peoples systems will vary in nature and manifestation - and so do the effects of solutions naturally. It is therefore wrong to assume that there is something wrong with people (or their audio systems) if they cannot relate to someone else’s personal experience, or to imply that only those who have had the same experience are “serious” fellow hobbyists.
I think it is not helpful to make general statements based on ones personal experience with specific “solutions” - especially on a highly subjective matter as music listening.

It’s a huge amount of money for cables.

I spent years working in recording studios. All kinds. Every one of them used decent cables fit for the purpose. Ordinary mains cables. Quality balanced audio cables. Decent connectors. Costing a few pounds each. Every recording you will listen to has used such cables. Many of them. The idea that spending 1400 for two cables is going to make a big difference to sound quality will be considered quite absurd by recording engineers.

Is this a joke?

Alas, no. It’s quite common in audiophile circles to maintain magical thinking about a range of topics. Folks invest in special medical-grade electrical outlets and have their houses rewired for separate circuits for the audio equipment. They buy liquids claiming to improve wire contacts, both for mains and interconnects. They become passionate about custom fuses. And they most definitely like the idea that expensive cables with quasi-scientific word swarms pull them towards listening nirvana.

I believe in a long-term goal of increasing general awareness about science and technology. Engaging benefits individuals and even the industry by helping to ensure that products and experiences are demonstrably true and accurate.

If those cables were making any real difference we could argue whether it is or is not a lot of money, whether it is worth it etc. etc. But, because they do not as anyone who had studied what would be high school physics in countries with good educational systems (or took senior-level college courses in the US  ) would see quite easily, it’s a pointless discussion, the only effect present is purely psychological one.

What were the brands / models? You don’t say. Maybe I missed it.

Model numbers don’t matter, cost does

The reason I ask is there is a long history on the forum of buying more expensive data center cables only to find problems in a domestic environment. For example, CAT 8 with heavily shielded RJ45 connectors designed for enterprise grade grounded switches and server chassis. Or backhaul CAT 7 with GG45 connectors that look like RJ45 to the casual eye.
