Hi,
Will Roon also update my folder structure like one folder per artist, folder for album with year… (without all the issues I have with other software) or only show the correct info and update the ID tags / meta data but leave me with this current mess on the SSD?
Folders are watched, and music files, including metadata, imported into your Roon database. Any edits performed in Roon are contained in the database; Roon doesn’t alter your media folders and files*.
*If you delete an album in Roon, it will delete the media files.
What mess do you want sorting? Whilst no a Roon support issue, there are many experienced users who can probably help you get your media library in good order. Indeed, I’m continually tweaking file metadata and folder names etc. as I catalogue all my CDs, vinyl, and digital downloads on Discogs.
I don’t know… Ive tried media monkey, music bee and mp3tag but I’m still having folders like 2pac and 2 pac or joss stone and Joss Stone. I ran every Programm 10 times updating tags and told them to manage my folder
even with 25 years basic it experience this is killing me. for movies it’s so easy with tinymm and emby
I’ve no clue what all these programmers are doing but it’s not as it should be in 2023…
No program can do magic without errors. Roon is one of the best for recognizing but only for albums in the online DB. If you have such errors like capitals or spaces you have to deal them by yourself.
Now with the actual problem. I don’t know the status of your library but I’ll take for granted that it’s in a good shape. You’ll download Foobar2000 and load ALL of your music there. If you have DSD files you’ll have to install an extra component but I’m not going to cover it here. When it finishes the indexing you will open the “Album List” panel and start editing. By default it shows the folder structure but down it has a dropdown menu. There you will choose whatever you want to edit.
Create a folder in the SAME DISC but OUTSIDE Foobar2000 library. Try to move every correct album to that folder with your own structure. Soon the library would contain only the problematic albums.
Then start edit. Better start with “YEAR”. Try to have a 4 digit format and eliminate the other digits or remastered dates.
After that you can edit the album name. Try to find a format that suits you. Discogs is the best source. Or you can try Wikipedia. Copy - paste on weird names and that’s it.
Then the name. Again the above sites are your friends. Change the view to artist, choose all of the different ones and edit the tag. The wrong names will disappear from the library and you will be ready to start again from step 1.
To be clear, is Roon identifying releases accurately? Is the issue with the file and folder structure on the SSD?
If the latter, I’d recommend using MusicBrainz Picard to correctly identify, rename, and move the albums to a new folder. The app is far from perfect, but it does a good job 95% of the time. Just add a release at a time.
I use this file naming script under Options > File Naming:
hi both many thanks!! the thing is with +2000 albums the train for manuel editing has left some years ago I guess… but I’m thinking about starting fresh
so dar I do not have roon I was thinking about it… happy Thursday!
SongKong is designed for automated identification and renaming of music files. You could run this against your 2000 files in one go and you get a report showing exactly what has been identified, and there is an undo feature if there is anything you dont like.
