Good looking and good sounding monitors in $1000 - $1500 price range

I live in Sweden, so checked some Sweden vendors. About $1000 with the iso-somethign stand for a BM5 MKIII pair, and almost twice as much for the Excite X14A. The Lyd 5 and 7 is spread out between those.

I wonder if not the BM5 MKIII is the most price-worthy, especially since it has high-pass filter which I might need, and the Lyd series don’t have those.

The MKIII are rear-ported, something to consider. But their prices have dropped and now I am shopping for them again.

Scandinavians are making some great - really really great - audio gear these days. (And music too.)

I can’t see anyone unhappy with the Dynaudio unless one is looking for warmth or coloration other than accuracy. I know it’s above your budget but the companion subs look awesome too. Except I’m not sure whether the subs have RCA inputs and, if they don’t, that means you’ll need a new DAC with XLR outputs. :sunglasses: And so it goes…

Good luck.

I’ve have the Dynaudio Focus XD 200 driven by a sonic transporter AP 8/ microRendu/ Uptone LPS-1 and Berkeley Alpha USB convertor for a year now.

Pretty expensive but very impressive and absolutely no need for subwoofer…fills a living room.

Dynaudio just released firmware update which tightened up the sound even more.

I already have a sub, so I plan to test whatever I buy with and without the sub. For a speaker like MKIII I would put the high pass filter at 60 Hz and match that on the sub (my logic here is to let the much more expensive monitors handle everything except the lowest bass which the sub takes care of). Then let room correction sort out the rest

Hopefully the sub (an AudioEngine S8) don’t make the sub in the monitors frequency range sounds worse.

Today I listened to Adam A7X, Yahama HS8 and EVE Audio SC207. Here is a mini-mini review of those:

  • Adam A7X sounded a little hard and lifeless, might be excellent for mixing but not something I liked. Good punchy bass though.
  • Yahama HS8 sounded good but a little boring (very flat).
  • EVE Audio SC207 sounded very airy and open, but lacked a little punch in the bass.

I would definitely select the EVE Audio from those 3, but I have yet to listen to Dynaudio BM5 MKIII or Lyd 7.

[/quote]I live about 5 km (3 miles) from Genelec company. I wonder if I can get a discount if I go there directly?

I’ve had the same thinking in the past - but alas - here in USA good manufacturers protect their distributors/dealers and usually charge full list price to a customer buying direct. I learned that lesson the hard way.

Maybe they have a factory shop where you can get a good deal on seconds and one-offs? Or find an employee who deals with merchandise that “fell off the back of the truck.” :sunglasses:

Genelec is made in Sweden? Didn’t know that and it only confirms my opinion re Scandinavian quality gear.

Oops, mistake, they are made in Finland, but still part of Scandinavian. I guess the Genelec office I saw was some regional headquarters.

Danish and Finish are beating us in Audio, whats going on here!!!

The Finns are an audio powerhouse. I used to have a pair of these. Still miss them sometimes (even if they can’t compete with the made-in-USA Wilsons).

Yikes, how did they manage to get down to 30 Hz with those, they are normal studio monitor sized. To bad they cost an arm and a leg, and aren’t active!

Btw, here in Sweden (and the rest of Europe I think), “Made in USA” means you can get better and/or cheaper stuff made somewhere else :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, I’m aware of that sentiment, and in general, I don’t disagree, but we still make some good stuff here. My Wilson Sophias are an example (though mine are actually Series 2). People also seem to like these.

Well, to be honest, its even more true about Sweden (due to high taxes and stuff)

But generally speaking, lots of really good stuff is developed in USA (and in Sweden also), but then other parts of the world often copies and makes cheaper alternative. Speakers are actually an exception, since they are a little harder to copy.

I don’t think I will find many active speakers in the $1000 range at Wilson though!

After reading up on the KEF LS50 Wireless, and especially since there is talk about making it Roon ready, that speaker is now at top of my wanted list. It looks awesome and supposedly sounds awesome, to bad its so expensive.

Other options: EVE Audio SC208 running without sub, or Dynaudio LYD 5-7 or BM5 MK III with sub.

Anyone here that has listened to some of them and can give some feedback?
