Google Nest Hub as a Roon Display

Dear roon team
Why is this not moving faster? This is really not an exotic requirement. Google Nest Hub as display is a perfect combination with roon. Why can’t you give this more attention. I thought paying (quite much) for a software like roon will give me more confidence that the software will continuously be developed, it was my expectation that a commercial product will keep up with technical trends - is this a wrong assumption?

Hi
I hope this is a simple fix

I’m running roon core on an old pc and have just connected a google nest hub as a display. When I press play the screen on the nest hub switches to roon and displays the track playing. Perfect. However, after 90 seconds the nest hub changes the display to show the google clock or google photo slide show. Roon is still being cast to the nest hub but you have to keep scroll through the hub to find roon and then after 90 seconds it switches the display on the hub again. Stopping a music track and starting again does nothing. The only way to get hub to auto switch to roon again, is to go into the google home app, click on the nest hub and click stop casting. Then, next time you select play on roon, the nest hub will switch to roon display, but again for only for 90 seconds.

Can you help please ??

Thanks
Matt

Hello @Matthew_Jones, this is a known issue. There is a feature request thread for this and I’ll add your post to that.

Hi Jason,
Having this problem with the nest hub and by all accounts its been going for some time with no fix. Are you using the old chromecast to tv or the newer chrome cast tv with the remote ?

I’m using the older Chromecast (no 4k either).

Thanks for reply. Only asked as I’m trying to find out if it works perfectly as a display with the new chromecast tv before I buy one !!

Matthew all the chromecasts work reliably with Roon in my experience.
I can leave it running on the TV for several hours unlike the Google home hub.

My son has the new Chromecast with Google TV and it is a great device

Thanks Michael, I’ll give it a try

A friendly ping to get the attention of the devs

Not sure how this isn’t a trivial fix. And with no response from Roon I have to make my own mind up: it’s easy. Cast the image as a “video” or similar to prevent the screensaver from kicking in. If it works with Chromecast I cannot imagine this is a difficult fix.

That said, for Ropieee users, I guess purchase a HAT screen?

Google have just release another Nest Hub (2nd Gen), a V2 of the original Nest Hub. It has some additional features so presumably has different hardware and software to the original version. So if Roon are working on compatibility, Nest Hub is now a moving target.

I wouldn’t expect the software for v1 vs v2 nest hub or nest hub max to be meaningfully different with regards to casting.

I also wouldn’t expect it be that hard or take too much effort to make it work, but it just doesn’t seem to be a priority. 🤷🏻

TLDR: If it was not ‘that hard or too much effort’ we would have had it working 2 years ago.

I have just retired from working in IT (not software dev work) after 20 years. I quickly learnt after starting out that the reason something was broken/persistently unreliable or didn’t exist was because making it happen was too difficult. Project managers tended to put difficult stuff near the end then suddenly declare a ‘change of project scope’ to pass it onto the next project manager - too difficult. So only the easy stuff ends up getting done before the time and money run out.

Also TLDR: I’m 35 years in IT and still going , many things in IT we’re often told after a lot of head scratching, umm’ing & arh’ing and sucking in of air, ooh that’ll take quite some resource and money just because it sounds difficult, when in fact many things just aren’t that tricky. I know we shouldn’t over trivialise things, but having worked my way up through most things IT and being pretty practical and able to be hands on if required at most aspects, I’m also very used to IT suppliers taking liberties, overestimating and often having misaligned priorities, then when they realise you actually know the technical detail they often change their stance or just get very defensive, guess there’s a number of professions simular tbh……

I have quite a number of apps on my phone that all work very well with the Google Hub / Chromecast with zero issues. I think if a company is motivated to make it work they can get it working pretty quickly, the question is do they have the competence, inclination and priority to do what others have done with relative ease… It’s not like this is just a bit of free or cheap software, people pay a lot of money to use this platform, it would be good if some of those fees were put into the effort of making features like this that it’s customers want work. I’m sure the feature would be quite a popular one, it’s not like it’s a feature only a couple of people have asked for…

+1 for this feature please.

Any news, I’ve been waiting for this for nearly 2 subscriptions now, I think it’s time for me to not renew as not enough progress…

It’s been more than 2 years of posts complaining about this feature being broken. It’s obviously still broken which is kinda laughable. I also find no reason to continue my subscription given what tidal can do, especially with regard to multi channel audio. Paid for a year of roon, so they got me.

my google nest hub max used to always connect no problem. now i guess sine an update, i have to reboot my nest hub max everytime i want to use Roon. the audio will not connect otherwise

My Home Hub still can’t keep the Roon Display for more than 5 mins then back to screen saver…
