I can hardly believe it’s 50 years since Wish You Were Here was released… Where does the time go?
Great album but seeing Gilmour today certainly shows where time has gone.
I never understood the album cover which is a contrast to all other Floyd albums.
I seem to recall that the original album was wrapped in black plastic with the circular “2 robot handclasps” as a sticker on the front?
I bought the LP the day of release, and the cover I am describing is the two men shaking hands with one’s back on fire.
You may not be able to see, even zoomed in, but the back of the garage is painted with the stripes from DSOTM.
Right - that is the photo on the album, but I feel sure that my album was wrapped in black shrink-wrapped plastic with the sticker…
I also think there were postcard photos inside as well…
You have a great memory, but I do not recall the covering or the postcards. I believe Welcome to the Machine is used at some audio shows.
You are right @Geoff_Coupe. Mine certainly had the black shrink wrap and sticker. Maybe it was a UK/Europe thing? It also had at least one postcard (see below). Then I get confused between WYWH and the posters etc that came with DSOTM.
Yup, and the Guardian article confirms it:
The notion to offer fans multiple images in the package was to “add to the joy” of it, said Powell. That’s also why they got the impish idea to shield the cover in black plastic, a move that was also meant to underscore the theme of absence. At the same time, the packaging was “supposed to be like a Christmas present where you don’t know what’s inside”, Powell said. “Of course, the record company hated it because we were covering up all these expensive images. But the band had total creative control, so they had to back off.”
You are correct, in the states the original album was wrapped in opaque plastic with that sticker on it. And there were postcards inside. I think my original vinyl might still have the postcards inside. I need to go check it out…
Bit morbid , out of interest the stunt man who did the burning man died a few months back, hit the headlines somewhere
The album was my original red spot album, max volume just the index light o the power amp. Not sure the neighbours agreed with it
Off to listen it ![]()
