I always do that with all music related purchases. I always use foam tips don’t like silicon and they have to be be large size as they are the only ones that give me a decent seal. My right ear canal also seems to be wider than the left. I do struggle sometimes with the wider nozzle iems a bit. The Shures I use are so comfortable, finding the senneheir ie300 ok but not for long periods sadly.
custom IEMs aren’t very expensive. Well some models are reasonably priced.
They fit far better than any universal fit did, at least for me.
I can not recommend with more enthusiasm that you give them a try.
The 64 Audio U12t are very pricey but are very comfortable - I need angled stems like the ones that come on their included 3.5mm cable for them to sit right, though.
I think about this. I’m curious what manufacturer you wear. Because it’s my outer ear that can be the issue, I’ve wondered if customs would solve for that as well as inner ear fit. I don’t see how they can.
I started with a pair from https://alclair.com/ They are in Minnesota.
Once I had convinced myself it wasn’t a fluke, I’d really use these a lot, I got a pair from https://thecustomart.com/ out of Warsaw Poland as I had heard good things of Piotr the founder.
Both places treated me well. I clearly have no issues recommending either.
I watch a lot of mixed martial arts and some of those announcers have cauliflower ear something fierce, they use custom IEMs from what I can see to handle the scar tissue. My thoughts at least.
Thanks! I’ve been kicking around the idea of custom Campfire Audios. I’ll look at your recommendations, too.
My ears aren’t that bad Those guys’ ears have sure taken a beating, though.
The FH9 I really like - excellent sound for me although- I can agree with others in that the right tips are essential - the supplied ones were ok, but became uncomfortable after about 30 mins. I ended up using spin fits CP100 in M/L sizes to account for slight differences in my left and right ear canals. Finding the right fit makes such a difference - even more so with the FH9 as they are 12.8gm each
So even with all those supplied tips you had to buy more to get the best fit.
Yes but to be totally honest I didn’t go through every type in the supplied FH9 set, as I already had CP100 from a previous iem
on the IEM + tips thing… I have a set of Jabra 75s that fit perfectly, I think with the tips they came with out of the box.
I have a set of Sony WF-1000MX4 that I can’t make fit properly, regardless of which tips I try. I bought a pack of pricey assorted tips, and still, they don’t fit as well as the Jabras. (Tried the jabra tips in the sony too.)
Some IEMs just have a housing/body shape that don’t work well with one’s ear shape.
@terzinator - Hi Chris. Maybee you can find inspiration here:
Torben
Very nice. I love eames and the essential design of the cabinet with the grain of the wood enhanced by the matte finish
“Simplified”
Very nice cabinet, chapeau. You can’t just ever buy a bigger amp again but it may be a good thing so you will never start to look at new headphone amps again
this is true! Although, the construction was soooo simple. No glue, just screws. So if I get a bigger or taller amp, maybe with tubes, and I need more height in that cubby, I’ll just replace the vertical pieces with taller ones.
But that won’t happen anytime soon.
(Famous last words!)
I have a Matrix Mini-i pro 3 that was a secondary streamer in my main system, but rarely gets used, so I thought I would do a comparison for my headphone corner.
If it bests the Pi > Schiit combo, I have no problem using it here. Would eliminate lots of cables and complexity.
Interestingly tho, I think the SchiitPie sounds better. Fuller, richer, more detail, yada yada.
I’ll keep comparing, but if the Matrix comes in 2nd, I’ll probably move it along. It’s a really nice unit, and it’s sleeker than the Asgard, looks-wise. But form follows function, ya know…
Try changing the filters on the Mini-I Pro 3.
There were one or two that sounded terrible in my setup (too long ago to remember as I have not changed them in a long time) but worth trying the different options
good point. Already was mucking with DSP within roon. Mini can handle DSD and higher res than the Schiit, but I’ll play with the Mini’s filters.
It may not change your mind, but worth a try.
Personally I find that the Pro 3 sounds best when upscaling too DSD128.
From that perspective it has become my favourite Headphone endpoint, but you might just like the sound of the Schiit and maybe nothing changes that
yeah, I did play around with DSD128, and it does sound good.
But there must be some pixie dust in the Schiit that my ears find appealing
I hear similar things from others, and they seem to revere good sound over good measurements.
I have never owned any Schiit myself, but tried several times in lockdown but always out of stock for UK delivery.
