Help with speaker grouping

I have a WiiM Ultra and 4 x Audio Pro speakers in other rooms in the house.

When playing on the WiiM Ultra (Living Room) I am trying to group to other speakers in the house but I am getting the following message.

‘4 zones can’t be grouped here’
‘It is only possible to group zones with other zones of the same type(e.g AirPlay with AirPlay)’
‘Zones that use RAAT can be linked with each other, unless they’re configured as private zones’

Can someone help me to group these speakers together, I have no issue grouping speakers when using the WiiM app with Plexamp or any other service?

That’s the answer.

What the message said. According to What does Roon work with?, AudioPro speakers are not Roon Ready, so they can’t use RAAT. I assume Roon is connecting to them via Airplay 2. WiiM Ultra is Roon Ready. The reason you don’t see this problem with other apps is that the other apps don’t see the WiiM Ultra’s Roon Ready/RAAT capability, so for them everything is Airplay (and maybe other common protocols like Chromecast, …).

What you could do (not that I have these devices to try it out myself) is to tell your Roon server (via Settings>Audio on the Roon app) to connect to the Wiim Pro via Airplay 2 as well. Then try the grouping you want.

I’ve went in to Settings>Audio on the Roon app, how do you tell the Roon server to connect either via Airplay or Chromecast?

I think you would need to enable that mode on the device itself or Roon bridge device, then you would see it as a choice to connect to in Roon - Settings - Audio.

As said, go to Settings > Audio. Then scroll down to the section “Other network devices”. There you should find ann AirPlay instance of your WiiM Ultra. Click the “Enable” button next to that instance. This will create a new zone for the WiiM Ultra in AirPlay mode.

Note that you will now have 2 separate zones for the WiiM Ultra. One using Roon’s RAAT, another using AirPlay. The AirPlay zone can be used for grouping with other AirPlay devices.

If the WiiM Ultra is anything like the WiiM Pro or WiiM Amp, you also have the ability to use Chromecast, but this needs to be enabled through the WiiM app. After doing so, you will have yet another instance of the WiiM Ultra in the “Other network devices” section that you can choose to enable.

The WiiM Ultra isn’t Airplay enabled, it’s chromecast.

The other speakers are chromecast compatible but are shown in ‘other network devices’ as Airplay.

The WiiM Ultra is ‘Living Room HiFi’

If you scroll further down the list of “Other network devices”, do you find any Chromecast instances of the Audio Pro speakers? If so, enable those (and optionally disable their AirPlay) instance. You should then be able to group the WiiM Ultra Chromecast instance with the Chromecast instance of the speakers.

In short, you can only group Roon Ready with Roon Ready (RAAT), AirPlay with AirPlay, and Chromecast with Chromecast.

Can’t see any instances of the Audio Pro in Chromecast which is strange.

I’d have thought I could group all the speakers through Chromecast.

Which model speakers do you have?

Audio Pro C5A, I’ve just done some digging and it appears they’re only AirPlay.

The C5MKII is Google Cast enabled so I’m going to replace the C5A in my kitchen with the MKII and at least that way I can group the living room and kitchen speakers.

That would indeed explain why you are not able to group with the WiiM Ultra which does not have AirPlay.

Good that you’ve been able to identify the source of the issue.

I’ve just bought the Audio Pro C5II which has chromecast enabled and it still won’t pair with my WiiM Ultra that is Chromecast enabled.

Anyone know why they won’t group together?

It’s Living Room Hi-Fi and Kitchen I’m trying to group.

I just noticed the following note on the FAQ related to zone grouping:

Note that Chromecast zones cannot be grouped within Roon, but can be grouped using the Google Home app. See the Knowledge Base article on Chromecast for more information.

Personally I never knew this as I don’t use Chromecast myself.

Google home app can’t find the WiiM Ultra and the Audio Pro to be able to make a group.

What a carry on.

Ive sorted it, there is a compatibility issue with Google Home, WiiM and iOS.

I was able to set up the group in Google Home on an Android tablet so all working now.

Nothings ever easy eh.
