How can I use multiple device without leaving two or more computers on

Roon Core Machine

Hello,

I currently have two separate audio rooms and for each room I have Windows PC for each room and realised that I have to unauthorise computer A to be on computer B vice versa unless I leave the authorised Roon server computer on which I do not want to as I rather minimise use of electricity.

Would there be another way other than keep unauthorising one to use another?

Thank you.

Is there any chance that these two rooms are in the same house…and on the same network?

Good afternoon David,
Thank you so much for your reply.
Yes, under same house, one user (me), not sharing it with any others. On the same network as well.
Room A - proper audio room with fanless laptop
Room B - just one active speaker with a desktop.
Everytime I switch from A to B to listen to music a little with Roon, I have to unauthorise Room A’s computer which is a bit inconvenient.
Thank you.

Sounds like you are running two instances of Roon Server. That’s an unusual thing to do in a single house.

See if you can uninstall Roon Server from the second computer. Then, install Roon Bridge. With Roon Bridge running in the background, you’ll be able to play from the first computer to the second one using your smartphone or tablet as a controller via the free Roon Remote app.

If power usage is a big concern, I’d suggest moving Roon Server to a Nucleus or doing a ROCK build. In my testing, power consumption is around 10 watts. You can also switch it off when you are not using it. Roon OS boots quickly.

You could also replace the second computer with a streamer, like the WiiM Pro or iFi ZEN Stream. Again, much lower power consumption.

Thank you again for your reply and kindness.

I see :frowning: hmmm I will consider Roon Nucelus but until I make the decision it seems the only way is to unauthorise then reauthroise whenever I want to switch :frowning:

Thank you for your support

Not really. Obviously, a Roon server must be running at all times to use Roon or Roon ARC. That Roon server can be one or the other of your computers, but does not need to be both. Since you are trying to save energy, is one of the computers on most of the time anyway? If so, use it as your Roon server.

You can purchase a Raspberry Pi 4 and run RoPieee on it. Use it in the room that does not have the running Roon server. Connect your DAC and sound system in that room to the Raspberry Pi4. When using Roon in that room, you can control it with a phone or tablet.

One of the main features of Roon is being able to play music to multiple rooms of your house from one Roon server.

If you are only able to have one computer on at a time, I suppose that’s true.

If you replace the second computer with a WiiM Pro streamer (COAX and TOSLINK S/PDIF outputs) or a Raspberry Pi (USB output) running RoPieee, perhaps that will address your power usage concerns. Cost is under $150

Thank you for a reply as well Jim,

I only use one computer at a time when, but I do not leave one on all the time.

Thank you for suggestions, I will consider Raspberry Pi 4 as well, thanks

With internal networking capability you only need one computer with one instance of Roon.

In our home we have Roon music available in 5 rooms, (kitchen, office, living room and 2 bedrooms) all driven by one instance of Roon running on a NUC/Rock dedicated server through our internal network with Ethernet. We have multiple options for remotes, Windows 10 laptop, IPAD 12.9 Pro, plus a Samsung and apple phone.

We can play something different at each location at the same time or group the endpoints together for whole house music.
