I’m new to RPi digital music streaming.
I’ve recently setup Volumio which works well, however the app is a bit naff.
Thought I’d try RopeeeXL after reading it can be used “even if I don’t use Roon”
I have installed RopeeeXL on a Raspberry Pi 4 and it seems to be running fine.
My noob question is, how do I now stream music using RopieeeXL connected to my Topping E50 DAC?
Maybe I’m misunderstanding the purpose of this build?
Hi Dennis,
According to me, you cannot use RoPieee XL standalone, without Roon Core.
So you always need something on which Roon Core is running, and only then RoPieee is of any use.
Kind regards, Frank.
You can use UPNP.
Install on your smartphone/tablet a UPNP control point app like Bubbleupnp, enable on RoPieeeXL UPNP/DLNA service.
This is enough to stream from Qobuz or Tidal.
If you want to stream local music you need a UPNP mediaserver (like Minimserver) running on a pc or NAS on the same network
… another way to stream to RoPieeeXL is to enable on it Squeezelite and run on another pc Logitech Media Server (LMS) or Daphile, LMS/Daphile will find the RoPieeeXL/Squeezelite endpoint on the network.
They can both stream Qobuz or Tidal installing the appropriate plugin and local music from a usb connected hdd
Thanks for your replies…really appreciate it.
You’ve answered my query perfectly and now I understand what RopieeeXL is for.
No, I’m not using Roon. I cannot afford Roon, or any other music streaming service unfortunately.
I’m simply trying to stream my own music library from a Windows share on my home network in the highest possible resolution.
Looks like RopieeeXL solution is not for me so I’ll continue to use Volumio until I find something which can do same job with better interface (and free or reasonable one-off cost).
Look at Picore Player it runs both server and player on same device and runs LMS and is a great piece of software. You can have a touch screen interface if you have a pic screen or you can use any other device as a controller via its webinterface. It has many plugins to give you extra metadata and organise your library it’s free and well supported on the squeezebox forums. If you set it to use the Material Skin interface it’s quite a nice gui too. It’s what I used for many years. It’s much more useful than any other pi only software as it can be like Roon lite.
