How to convert ISO files to a format supported by Roon

I am a complete noob to hifi streaming… and have this question, if I were able to get some ISO files from a couple original tape masters how could I play them in Roon?

I understand Roon doesn’t play ISO, so i would need to convert them/?

Could anyone explain to me in baby language how to do the conversion and whats the best route to keep the sound quality?

Tried to read a couple threads but get completely confused with all the file types and how to convert them to have a perfect reproduction of the original, or as close as possible. Don’t understand all the terminology and hence process.

Thank you

Not with Roon, some other Players may do that though.

i know, think foobar can do it but i want to just have everything in roon if possible

Then convert your ISO-files into single tracks. See also: Search results for 'ISO' - Roon Labs Community

Yes, you can use foobar to convert an ISO file to individual FLAC files. But first you must install some plugins that foobar calls “components”.

First install the foo_input_sacd and foo_dsd_processor components. Once you have done that you can play ISO files in foobar and if you right-click you can get into the foobar conversion options and convert to FLAC @ 24/88.2.

If you want to stay with DSD then you need an ISO to DSD converter. Some listeners prefer the sound of DSD to FLAC. A lot of this will depend on what protocols your playback system supports. If you are going down the DSD route it’s generally best to convert ISO to DSF rather than DFF as this allows you to tag the resulting files so that roon can identify them and add them in a searchable way to your library. You can use ISO2DSD.

Get ISO2DSD to split and decompress the DSD ISOs into “tracks” in the file format .DSF.

It’s a manageable format and can be given metadata, if required.

thank you guys i think this sets me on the right track.Thing is i want to make sure i keep a 1:1 quality conversion from the original iso images to dsd

You will keep the quality, but the files are pretty large. And, you need to create two sets if you desire them in multichannel (where available) as well.

In other words, the “extraction” is lossless, and you will not transcode or manipulate the content in any way.
