HQPlayer Embedded Discussion

You can of course also try the non-512+fs version. But usually the difference is rather small.

I just experienced major stutter from what I think was thermal throttling on my i9-11900 Ubuntu Server 24.04, playing 192kHz PCM through poly-sinc-gauss-hires-lp + ASDM7EC-light DSD256 with Holo May corrections. Most of the music I listen to is 96kHz PCM or below. I suspected this setup was at the edge for this filter/modulator/correction combination, but I had not noticed any issues with the lower bit rate material. Is this to be expected? If so, are there any configuration tweaks I could do to get better usage from the CPU cores? Actually, I’ve just noticed a brief stutter on a 96kHz track, and looking at btop, core temps are higher than I typically saw them before. Were there any changes in recent Embedded versions that could explain this?

I probably should try to upgrade this server, but I don’t have the time to figure it out in the next few months.

Impressive boost of performance after Update CPU microcode to 0x12B

My Sinc-MGa filter looks ā€œalmostā€ like Poly-Sinc-Gauss-Long after the update!

Improved temperature and performance

Are you running the generic AVX2 build or the Intel optimized one? You could try both and choose which one works better for you. 11900 has AVX-512 support, so the Intel build could be potentially better, but will also increase core temps and so thermal throttling is more likely.

Most of the modern i9 models throttle around 95C to limit temps to max 100C.

Yes, I also noticed pretty nice results with the latest microcode.

Thanks, I’m running the Intel build, and what you describe, 95C throttling, is what I’ve observed. I’ll try the generic AVX2 build to compare.

I tried to install generic 5.10.0 but got

hqplayerd depends on libomp5-18 (>= 3.9.0); however:
  Package libomp5-18 is not installed.

Intel 5.10.0 installed fine.

Happy New Year!

My first question for the year is:
Which filter would you suggest when listening to traditional FM radio broadcasts?

In particular, I use Accuphase T-1200, an FM tuner, and still enjoy some of the radio programs.
Now that I have the RME sound card installed on my computer, I mainly use XLR analog input to listen to the radio.
There is one digital output on the tuner, but that one goes directly to a PCM recorder.

The thing is that, unlike most other sources, radio sound contains quite a lot of distortion by its waves traveling through the air.

Perhaps you can suggest two different setups: one for the analog input and one for playing back the digitally recorded files.

Thank you in advance!

So, decided to upgrade to better cooled, more recent CPU, GPU. I’m considering i9-14900KS + RTX 4070 TI Super OC. Is that a balanced combination? I’ll mostly stay at DSD256 + DAC corrections for Holo May, occasionally experimenting with DSD512.

Due to the way stereo in FM radio works, I would suggest for example poly-sinc-mqa/mp3 or poly-sinc-gauss-hires.

That should work for both DSD256 and DSD512 with DAC correction… Assuming no particularly heavy convolution filters or something like that. Some parametric EQ should work fine though.

One more question: any benefit in more than 32GB DRAM (6000MHz)?

You have a beast computer for such needs , I’m already matching the requirements you mentioned with i9-14000 + MSI 4070 Super. Just if you do Sinc-L x DSD512 + DAC correction make sure your GPU has 16GB RAM, otherwise will be ok. Saludos!

Memory is so cheap that it’s worth installing at least 32GB.

Is it better to have it in one RAM card?
Some say two is better, and I’m not sure.

Thank you!

I am planning for at least 32GB (two cards), my question was whether 64GB would be beneficial for HQPlayer.

If it’s just for a server, 32gb would be enough. But I would personally buy a 2Ɨ32gb cl30 kit, especially since they don’t cost anything.

I have a new, more powerful server on order. I tried to buy a USB dongle for my Embedded 5 license, but they are not available. What should I do to switch the license when the new server arrives? Thanks!
