iFi Zen Streamer vs. NUC as Library drive host?

The ZS is an odd device. It was initially released as a Roon Bridge (I think because iFi didn’t get Roon Ready implemented or certified in time?). A f/w update was later released with actual Roon Ready support but even then I recall the device still mentioning or showing up as a Roon Bridge? I sold my ZS months ago so I don’t remember the details. When the ZS is in Roon only mode does is show up as a Bridge or Roon Ready device on Roon’s Settings > Audio page? What about when it is in the all-in-one mode?

Same

On roon mode:

On AIO mode:

This is absolutely correct. It is Volumio based and has a music player built-in for those who want to plug in a USB drive or play from a NAS etc.

OK, now I’m really confused. Can Roon access music that is stored on a USB drive connected to the streamer?

True, but if I use the knob and go from AIO to Roon only the volumio features should not work

Since not having a linux or win around, what kind of format do I have to use for my usb stick in order for the files to be visible on all the platforms. I’ll google but maybe your speed is beyond google

Maybe it was the Signal Path or some other settings page in Roon that still showed the Roon Bridge remnants, I don’t know. Or maybe that has since been fixed?

Either way, I’m not a programmer so I don’t understand everything in the link I posted but the way I understand it is:

Tested: DAC (DACs only?) that when plugged into a Roon (Bridge or Ready) streamer should be ID’d correctly by Roon with all settings (max PCM and DSD, etc.) auto configured
Bridge: Step below Ready. Built off the RAAT SDK (as are Ready devices) but generic software package provided by Roon that can be installed on any supported platform (Win, Linux, macOS, RPi, etc.)
Ready: Ultimate setup. Devices built by mfg from RAAT SDK for greatest compatibility, performance, and level of integration.

No not unless it can share it back out as a NAS share
Volumio has a full music player, but that is for use within Volumio web and app player.

It doesn’t have any Nas sharing functionality built-in and even if it is there would be no point using it when you can just pull it from Roon or any other system.

The Zen Stream tries to tick a lot of boxes. It has its music player (USB, NAS, UPNP), Roon Ready, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Apple Airplay and HQP NAA.

We are all tinkerer’s so yes absolutely.
I tried USB HD I the Stream and was underwhelmed when comparing it to Roon. Tinkering over at that point

Weird: I did erase with disk manager and formatted as ExFAT

All the data on the stick disappeared from osx, I did copy 3 files (REW sweeps:)

Connected again the \172.168.168.101\USB with roon
I see the backups created a hour ago, and a folder with the new name of the formatted usb stick. Select, import and the sweeps are playing.
So you can use the ZS usb for files

Funny that after 70 messages we end up trying exactly what the thread title is

I don’t think it did it when it was originally released and I just checked and there are no options in the settings for this (but I no longer have a USB drive connected) so they might not appe9

But once again why would you, I bet the performance is awful and if running Rock it is all there already. Just creating more issues for the future I think

100% true. No need for it and it does not even make logical sense to use’it like that because of the double path instead of one
