Importing unidentified albums into MusicBrainz (and subsequently Roon)

And it’s really quick if you use a browser import script.

What is the average time it takes for the information to appear in Roon in those scenarios?

It’s normally within 24 hours (or so). Roon tends to do a daily check. To date I’ve added 84 releases and they’ve all been really quick. It does take a bit of getting used to in terms of how it works, but then it’s pretty easy. Takes me a couple of minutes to add and check a release. I currently have zero unidentified albums!

Would you mind describing the process for this in a separate thread?
I am one those guys who bought a SaaS to alleviate all faffing around with metadata, but if the process is relatively straight forward, i just might…

No problem. I’ll send you a direct message. I’ve just got a work commitment at the moment, but will message later.

I would also be curious about the browser import script.

There’s a tutorial on this page. It talks you through installing TamperMonkey as a browser extension and then the “Import Bandcamp releases to MusicBrainz” script. This is the way that I did it. One thing you need to remember is to go to the “Manage extensions” option for TamperMonkey and enable the “Allow User Scripts” option (see screenshot)

Perhaps @mjw could separate these posts out to form a new thread.

Harmony is another really useful tool for importing streaming releases into MusicBrainz - I’ve used it a bunch to import stuff from Bandcamp, while also importing other metadata Bandcamp doesn’t always have (eg. barcodes, ISRCs) from streaming services. Pretty easy to use, too - drop in a streaming link and everything should be prefilled with very little manual correction needed.

One of the issues with importing releases into MusicBrainz is identifying those releases that you have that are not currently in MusicBrainz.

I added a task to SongKong called Add to MusicBrainz that trawls through your music collection looking for folders that have albums not matched to MusicBrainz, but with good enough data to add to MusicBrainz and then adds a MusicBrainz Add to Release tab for each album found

This is free with SongKong Lite, no license required. But the idea is you match your songs to MusicBrainz first using either SongKong or another MusicBrainz enabled tagger like Picard, then run Add to MusicBrainz afterwards to add the albums that could not be found in MusicBrainz. SongKong also matches albums to Discogs, so this also provides and indirect way to import Discogs releases into MusicBrainz.
