After I shutdown the only way I can power up again is by disconnecting the power…
No as per my earlier messages above I thought it disappeared and now it’s back.
I’ll try it a few times now and see how many times I get the same issue.

Ok I’ve just reproduced this 3 out of 3 times - and each time is with only with Roon playing to a single zone (so group zone is disabled). And Roon is playing to that single zone before Ropieee is powered up.
So as per my posts earlier today when I first flagged these observations, it doesn’t appear to be a group zone thing, since the same is happening with a single endpoint.
I don’t envy the task to find this bug. This one sounds tricky. But you have worked miracles already so we believe in you Harry !
Ok… but wait a moment.
“And Roon is playing to that single zone before Ropieee is powered up.”
I’m confused. How can you play to the zone if RoPieee isn’t powered up? Or are you using RoPieee just as a means to get a touchscreen setup running but your endpoint is in fact a different device?
Harry, this is sensational! I had been wanting to grab RPi for ages, and your work was enough to push me over the edge. The unit arrived today and within 30mins I had a working unit.
Am having an issue with severe static/distortion when using any of Roon’s DSP, this includes selecting DSP Volume or Volume levelling. The RoPieee is the only unit in my studio that exhibits this issue, so am wondering if I am doing something wrong?
At present I am using a Sound Devices USBPre2 as the DAC, I have disabled any Selected HAT as I don’t currently have one.
PS: Was wondering if you’re able to use the onboard 3.5mm jack at all? I tried selecting RaspberryPi DAC option in the menu but only got silence.
Thanks again,
Tony
Hi Tony,
Good to hear, welcome on board!
The static/distortion is something I’ve never heard of. In general all audio related things (including DSP) are being taken care of by Roon, so I’m inclined to say it’s not related to the RPi… Have you tried the USB in combination with DSP volume settings on a different endpoint?
With respect to the 3.5mm jack: right now RoPieee is a digital endpoint only. The ‘raspberry Pi DAC’ option you tried is related to I2S devices.
Thanks,
Yes it does. These are the default values in the UI, the static ones. There just there “for me”. This means that there is no communication. Weird…
Sean, to be sure: this is what you when you do the power cycle thingie?
And if you then go to settings and press ‘reboot’ all is fine and cool?
Just to confirm that I’m seeing the same:
This is using just a touchscreen on an RPi2, with no HAT or USB DAC attached.
Ok Thanks Geoff.
Confirmed by 3 people, so that seems something I should be able to reproduce
Hey Harry, as previously mentioned, no HAT and no USB DAC attached - just using it as a remote/display.
Same as Geoff mentioned
Ok… I can reproduce the issue. But I can’t explain. This issue can be reproduced when you’re starting up stuff, and RoonServer is not running. At that point you’ll get the screen with the ‘fake’ times.
Of course it’s wrong that RoPieee stays in this mode (in stead of just activating the screensaver), but it resolves itself whenever RoonServer comes available then.
So again… I can’t relate this to your situation.
Me puzzled.
So am I, because my Roon Server is always running; it’s on a NUC with ROCK installed, and it’s on 24/7…
Geoff,
Can I ask what’s the reason that you shutdown your RPi?
I don’t - it’s just that when I was getting the “unknown” display, a power reboot was the first thing I tried in those situations. Now I know that a reboot from the web page will get me up and running again if ever I get into that situation.
So I think what’s going on is that if you do a power cycle, it doesn’t seem to detect that Roon Server is already running. However, if you do a reboot from the web page, it does discover that Roon Server is running, and all is well…
Ok. So for now you’re good then?
Yep - I know what to do… Haven’t had time to try out zone groupings and multiple cores on this beta though, so I might be back
I’m sure others will share their thoughts, but for the touchscreen Pi’s, I am more likely to shutdown the Pi when not using it. Just like with PiCorePlayer, where we could shutdown easily from the touchscreen itself.
Personally I don’t care about the Pi running 24/7 but I don’t want the screen running 24/7.
Hey Harry, this is different. I had Roon already playing to a single endpoint before powering up the Pi. And still get this same frozen screen. So Roon Server was already running.
Hi Harry,
The static/distortion is something I’ve never heard of.
I have the same experience, this is the first issue with playback I have had with Roon. My home / studio has around 7 Roon Endpoints ranging from Mac computers to an Airplay and Sonos system.
From my audio experience it sounds like some sort of buffer or audio stream issue, definitely tied to any form of DSP being added to the stream.
Have you tried the USB in combination with DSP volume settings on a different endpoint?
Yes. Tried a few tests this morning to try and narrow this down. The only endpoint that exhibits this static is the RPi. I created a few Zone Groups, and experimented with the issue. So three systems all grouped, and playing happily in sync and clean until I turn on “Volume Levelling” in the Zone settings. The result is all three zones dropping in level as expected but the RPi adds in the corrupted audio static, whist the other two endpoints the Zone Group are clean.
Here are two screen shots showing the Signal Paths of a test with just the RPi

Thanks for your help, and for an exciting project! I am intending to build some small self powered mono speakers for the house running your Ropieee.
@Tony_David_Cray I use an DAC-AMP hat (with Volumio/RoonBridge as Harry has yet to get my IQAudIO DigiAMP+ working) but have had great experience with this combo using DietPi too for driving non powered speakers. There are some AMP hats that are working with Ropieee already however and are much easier than messing with building your own active mono speakers IMHO. Soon as the IQAudIO DigiAMP+ is supported I will migrate all my RPi’s to Popieee for now I have 2 running Ropieee and 3 not.
My main listening rig has Ropieee driving 2 USB DAC’s and is solid as a rock
