I am a bit sceptical this is a big deal and don’t see a use case for me. But we will see what people will come up with once this is being rolled out.
Starting a vinyl and listen to it via Arc in the car for 20 minutes was my favorite suggestion so far
Really sounds like roonExtend.
I hope the price will be reasonable.
I wonder if a Roon Relay box will be priced for everyday people or audiophile priced? Hopefully the former.
Of course you would need an Apple Music paid app.
We are all just speculating here. If it’s a box that can send CD output to the Roon server, why couldn’t it send the iPhone output? The fact that other devices can do that is immaterial.
This thread is about this:

Hey, Community friends, we’ve got exciting news on the Roon Ready gear front. Check out our blog announcement and stay tuned for more details - coming soon!
It is in my opinion onyl a big deal if somebody uses the DSP with other sources than Roon. I like to listen to LP and CD too and could then use the strong 64 bit DSP engine to use convolution filters for all of my sources.
What makes me wonder is that nobody from the heavy forum users wrote that OPRA and Roon Ready Relay already existed as extension software made by other people. It seems that the best external ideas now become officially.
I am really struggling to see a use case for this, sorry.
Can anyone give me a use case?
I can’t do better than previously:
Plenty have been listed already, in this thread and the blog post.
None of the examples listed offer any benefit from say a ripped CD. But hey obviously its not for me, and thats ok.
I realised there were similar extensions already.
OPRA is different from Roohead as I understand it though, OPRA has imported and cleaned the data from AutoEQ into it’s dB, whilst Roohead uses AutoEQ and relies on it being accessible in order to function.
OPRA is also independently accepting submissions for EQ outside of AutoEQ.
Roon relay is not here yet so it’s impossible to compare features.
Except for something not available on CD.
Someone may have an original version on vinyl where only remasters are available on streaming services.
Someone may prefer the vinyl to the cd version of a release.
So rip the record then a million methods to do this already for peanuts.
I doubt I would ever use it myself. Why would I play vinyl in another room when I still have to walk to another room every 22 mins to Flip it over. Same goes for cd player, id just play it in the room and play my rip elsewhere.
I can already play any other music app to my stereo or any other room so again not needed and why add the complication of using two apps to do it.
The only real advantage I really see is for being able to use DSP on sources that normally you couldn’t. But it’s still compromised by my first two points.
I tried the extensions a few years back and the delay involved put me off and the fact it was just too fiddly. I guess this will make it less so. But it won’t be for me.
I would use opra , crossfeed and convolution filters with my Vinyl setup.
I also got multiple endpoints in one room (headphone setup and 2.1 loudspeaker setup).
And I’m already using a phono DSP with digital outputs .
I would definitely benefit from such a option.
And playing the LP is definitely part of the fun. Otherwise I could just download a rip of most things . I’m not even big into LPs but I would appreciate this as additional input source for roon
I’ve found a use case that I’ll probably use; listening to FM radio throughout the house, or at least have it on my iPhone to AirPods.
My mate has a convolution filter that ‘fixes’ room issues. He could use it on his record player.
What would the price be on these devices? Roon already does this via an extension through a radio station and so does the rooPlay extension from the developer of rooExtend. Is there a difference expected?
Maybe Harmon/Roon have purchased RooExtend.
The linked statement says there will be device news at CES 2025 (7th Jan). Given how long it took for the Nucleus Titan to become available from initial announcement I wouldn’t hold your breath. Titan has only just become available here in the UK…
Ok, it might not be a use case for you, but someone with an extensive vinyl collection might not want to rip them, even for “peanuts”.
I’ve no idea how much a vinyl ripping setup costs, minus time involved to do the ripping.
Relay provides a use case, whether useful to you or not.
Mmh, hopefully Roon will not stop beeing rigorous in Roon Ready, which means high quality bitident transfer.
Obviously I’ve made for me an extension to include radio channels from my SAT receiver into Roon, I’ll surely not become a Roon relay user.
Listening Vinyl e.g. is for me something, what should be completely analogue. Also listening to a CD, DVD-A, SACD,… (all datas are already include in Roon) is something, what I’ll do outside (as contrast) from Roon.
Also Room correction is for me not an argument, because Dirac is here my first choice.
