Is this even a NUC + fanless cases?

Hi, I recently bought an used Asus PN63-S1 i3 that was sold to me as a NUC. I didn’t even look because I had seen Asus makes NUCs from a certain generation up and the thing looks like a NUC: Mini PC PN63-S1|Mini PCs|ASUS Global

It works perfectly with Rock and Arc but that fan… it’s not loud but, being small, has sort of a high pitch that is easy to hear at night. I can’t easily put it in some other place as router etc is in my listening room, it’s a rented flat and there’s no easy way to pull an ethernet cable. So I went and looked at fanless cases, found Akasa but I’m not even sure if this Asus is a NUC and what model it might be.

I think it’s an asus version of the Nuc Performance Panther Canyon with an extra Display Port. Akasa doesn’t seem to have a case for this and I found something on some forum about these having a wattage higher than their cases are meant to handle.

I think I might as well resell this Asus and find something used and pre-built but I wanted to check with you guys first. All of this is fairly new to me, took me years to even get why Roon was a thing

It doesn’t look as if that case is fanless… however, depending on your confidence level, I suspect you can have a look in the BIOS settings, change the “Fan Control Mode” to Quiet, and never hear it again - EXCEPT when adding new albums, but it quickly ramps back down again.

Yes, the case is definitely not fanless, that’s the problem I’m having with it. Now that everything is silent I can clearly hear it 3 meters away and I’m typing from a full sized desktop PC that I can barely hear :slightly_frowning_face:

My Bios is pretty different from the one on the link and there’s just two options as far as I can see… the current one which is Qsmart or something like that that spins at 1500 rpm give or take; and disable the Q whatever thing and it turns it into an industrial hoover in my living room! It’s a slow fan speed but it’s still very intrusive and very present.

I’m going to try to hide it behing something tomorrow and see how that goes. If it keeps like this I’ll just get my money back, lessons learned and go for something else.
