I have tried flashing my Rpi3 on four different micro SD cards using the latest download (ropieeexl_ose_pi3-2023.11.0-stable.20231126.1176.bin) and BalenaEtcher and all have either failed to flash or if they succeed flashing the unit powers on, the green light flashes once and then nothing but the red light is on (ethernet and green light stay dark).
I went back in my archive and flashed 20220211-ropieeexl-ose_rpi234-stable.bin to two of the cards and it worked fine so the SDs are working just fine as far as I can tell.
So, what am I doing wrong here?
If I left the 20220211-ropieeexl-ose_rpi234-stable.bin on that unit, would it eventually update to the latest? Or is that version too old and I will need to manually install anyway?
I also noticed that the bin file size for the Rpi3 and Rpi4 versions from the recent downloads are the same size. But the xz file sizes are different? May not means anything but thought it was worth mentioning.
I have successfully flashed and started up two RPi4s using the latest download (ropieeexl_ose_pi4-2023.11.0-stable.20231126.1179.bin) and belanaEtcher today, also. Which tells me the process I use works (normal process no mods).
Any help or pointers would be great, thanks.
Edit: I get the same results using win32diskimager…
Yep, tried the compressed file also. Re-downloaded a couple time also.
I will give Rufus a try, thanks.
Edit: I tried Rufus with the same results, the red and green light come on when I first plug in. Green light goes out after a second or so then flashes once and goes out. Ethernet never even tries (no lights).
This is getting frustrating.
I got a checksum for the file from rufus. Can one of you check yours to see it is matches?
Thanks for the help. I may just have to leave this unit with the old version…
Ok, so here is final verdict, and a good laugh for you all.
I have been struggling with this for a day and a half and decided to take a closer look at the boards to verify they were good… Well, the fact is this unit is not in fact a RPi 3 but an RPi 2b. So there’s my problem. As far as I know, the new version does not work with the 2B.
I have now marked the unit with big yellow marker so I do not go through this the next time I try to fix/update this RPi.
Thank you for the help. Time for a few drinks and some music to drown my embarrassment…
My biggest fail was spending a lot of time why something wasn’t booting, only to find that one cable had gotten loose. After that, I always check cable first, lol.
