I’m pretty sure it’s the SSD … Can both of you tell me exactly what brand and model you have?
I’m not saying the ssd is bad, just that it’s not compatible in some way. Should be easy to fix if I had one in my hands.
It was working fine on W10 with the same Samsung 128gb drive and there were no errors when the ROCK image was installed from the USB stick. There is apparently something strange going on when trying to read the drive during boot.

@Bert_van_der_Leest – did you ever use this Intel NVME stick in the 5th generation NUC successfully? People are reporting issues with various NVMe sticks in 5th generation NUCs, that don’t seem to exist in the 6th or 7th.
I fear you have a hardware compatibility issue. One of the SSDs on our suggested list will probably work fine for you with that NUC5i3.
Ubuntu server installs just fine. The nuc is now running ubuntu with roon core.
can you give me the output from the following commands on your ubuntu?

At Danny’s recommendation I replaced the 961 NVMe SSD with a Transcend 64Gb M.2. ROCK installed, rebooted, and I restored my previous Roon . All works great now, no issues on my NUC 5i5RYH 
I’ll just save that 961 SSD for a newer NUC.
