Latest Rock version? not used for 2 years

Hi,
I haven’t used Roon for 2.5 years and I’d like to get back to using it.
I see that on my NUC I currently have Rock version 1.0 build 259.
I installed the latest Roon Server Software (v 2.57) but I’m not sure what I need to do for Rock?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You have the latest version.

oh that’s great thank you :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Actually the latest ROCK is 2.1 (build 271)

Only for NUCs that use UEFI.

sorry but…what is UEFI? how do I know if NUC uses it?

Motherboard firmware. It’ll depend on the NUC’s CPU.

Nothing to be concerned about. If it ain’t broken …

There are two branches of Roon OS, and you are on the latest for your hardware.

The non-uefi ROCK is not longer getting any updates.

Any hardware in the last 15+ years supports UEFI. Switching at a time like this is ideal.

Wot? For the OS you mean, server updates are just fine.

Unfortunately, ROCK / Roon OS has supported UEFI only since November 2022, ~15 years after any hardware supported it, so there are countless BIOS installs (and Nucleus before One/Titan) in the wild, only due to this shortcoming in Roon OS. So surely Roon Labs will still provide security updates when needed, no? You haven’t officially EOL’ed it…

I addition, in September 2024 Roon Labs has claimed that…

Did you cancel that? Maybe tell your customers in this case.

thanks. I know, I spent the last 8 hours doing that  and…magic, it worked! I’m now running ROCK OS 2.1 (build 271)

This would be quite disappointing indeed.

Could you explain what you had to do or link to where you found out how to?

Thanks

it was super easy with ChatGPT. I said I wanted to change my BIOS to UEFI, and then step by step it guided me. I did hit several errors and issues, each time I made a screengrab of the issue asked ChatGPT to analyze it and propose a solution and I managed to handle it in 2.5 hours more or less (I lied when I said above it took me 8h) including the reinstall of ROCK. After you’ve reinstalled Rock, you will have to update it and voilà. All things considered it was relatively easy, but without the help of AI it would have taken me days…or I would have dropped it altogether.
(Tip: make screengrabs of your different BIOS screens and Chat will tell you exactly what to tick and untick. Magic.)

Change the hardware in the BIOS settings from Legacy Boot to UEFI and reinstall ROCK (or Nucleus). Certainly not a super easy thing to do, given the Roon user base, and the fact that it’s considered „an appliance“.

There’s a Help article on configuring the BIOS for UEFI…

For an Intel NUC:

  1. Power on system.
  2. Press F2 when prompted to enter BIOS menu.
  3. Navigate to BootBoot Order.
  4. Select the desired mode: UEFI or Legacy (if available).
  5. Press F10 Save Changes and Exit, the system will save the changes and reboot.
