I have a crimson preamp and dual mono blocks. I had a chance to listen to the lumin u2 mini with Denafrips ares 15th and was blown away how good it all sounded. Question is has anyone compared the P1 mini to the u2 min with a dac. I know I already have a preamp. Just wondering which to buy. I like that p1 has ARC and all in one. But separates are usually better. Thanks.
We always recommend our own internal DAC (i.e. models with analog output) since you’ll have less chance of running into incompatibility, DAC pop noise, and/or DSD limits. Also if you use Lumin volume, analog output works better.
Im a big fan of the Lumin AIO, I have D1/D2 and P1Mini and use them all still but the newest P1 mini is my main system. Lan in and XLR out direct to my active speaker is just perfect - no ass of cables and boxes etc not to mention power cords and points used. You can still use an external DAC if you want to and you also get a pre in with P1 mini too - handy for the odd spin up of some vinyl
I’m using P1 mini with both analogue output (internal dac) and digital (chord dave/mscaler) the difference in sound quality is minuscule.
Both P1 mini & U2 mini are excellent devices (I’ve had both) but the former has got the sound quality edge & the benefits of ARC & some pre-amp functionality.
Ah ok, maybe the T3X is the better option for that. The P1 mini is more a jack of all with its multiple inputs and pre in too.
I had a need for inputs including analog but at the time there was no T3X but that will likely be my next update to ultimately replace the D1&2’s that I have
But go listen to both.
P1 mini also has manually operated volume and iR remote which can be a little more WAF friendly
The ARC in th p1 mini is something I’m looking for. But I think the tx3 should be a better sounding streamer dac combo since it’s roughly the same price but without a preamp and other digital inputs.
You have made excellent choices and as it appears you are on point as to what you are trying to achieve sonically overall. That said, trust your ears and your instincts. Remember, there is no right, wrong or the perfect path as everyone’s tastes vary. You are the author, writer and master of your sonic utopia. In my respectful opinion it’s all about enjoying the music and the journey is part of the fun.
I noticed if I use the Lumin preamp and turned up to about 90%. It starts to distort. And it’s not loud at all. When I hook my preamp to the Lumin everything is fine. I can list to music much louder and no distortion. Could there be some power issue ?
I gave that a try yesterday setting analog output to low and that did help a little. But over all the volume is too low meaning even when I turn up the volume to 90 it’s not that loud. Not that I even like listening to loud music. When I use my preamp everything is great. At all volume levels.
Calculated by the input voltage sensitivity in specifications so that your downstream equipment is not getting a higher voltage signal that it cannot handle (i.e. clipping).
