M4 Pro Mac mini

Yes I did try, at least it didn’t work in this test setup over WiFi to a NAA (DSD256 does work). I cannot obviously test it with locally USB connected DAC…

Thanks so much for the data. I think I’ll wait for some feedback on the M4 Pro since I would like to upsample to 512. My plan is to leave Roon running on the Mac Mini M1 and purchase another Mac for HQP. Everything will run wired ethernet.

I have the Holo Spring 3 L2 that should arrive by the end of January so I hope to have everything in place by then.

What I’ve seen reports, the 14 core M4Pro does roughly same as my M1Max. So DSD512 should work at least with default filters and ASDM7EC-light. Maybe also with some heavier settings. Of course using NAA to work around the CoreAudio DoP limitations.

Thanks Jussi. I have the Holo Red as my NAA.

I may also consider a Mac Studio M1 Max used.

I know this may be off-topic, but for $1,399, I can get something like this:
• Ryzen 7 9800X3D
• X670E motherboard
• 32GB DDR5 (5200 MHz+ OC)
• 1TB Gen5 PCIe 5x4 NVMe M.2 SSD
• 512GB SSD
• RTX 4060 Ti 8GB
• 750W Gold PSU
• AIO cooler
• ATX case

However, I’m not sure how well this would meet HQPlayer’s demands compared to the M4 Pro.

How many Mac minis fit in an ATX case? Never mind not wanting one in the living room :man_shrugging:

Yup… That’s why I let Tim cook his M6, as the M4 Pro didn’t meet expectations.

If one uses a NAA and places HQPlayer server outside of living room, for example in a technical room, size is likely less of an issue. While Mac Mini and Studio are certainly small and pretty for living room. Mac Pro goes to the ATX case category though.

With my latest optimizations (coming in next release), base model Mini M4 can do quite a lot.

Is that still going to be in the 5.x series or move up to V6 ?
The continuing improvements to the v5 series have been rather excellent and much appreciated

Yes, it is still 5.x…

Can you give more details on what settings the new version will unlock for Mac mini?

I’m still in the return window on my base model mini 4 and thinking of returning and going up to the better chip or going with the new studio.

Currently I’m only able to do dsd 256 with the setting I want to use. Anything at 512 stutters or has popping.

At least DSD512 without DAC correction works with default filters and ASDM7EC-fast without breaking a sweat. Performance core loads are about 60%, total load for HQPlayer process is about 220% doing that.

I have not tested DAC correction at DSD512 yet or many other things like that.

Amazing! I don’t use DAC correction so not a concern for me. Thanks, sounds like I’ll stick with the base model and save some money.

When is the new version expected to be released?

@jussi_laako 2025 is shaping up to be an incredible year for HQPlayer, thanks to you. So exciting!

Here’s now some testing results with base model Mac Mini M4…

Can the efficiency cores contribute more to mitigating the lack of GPU support?

Not in the way as on other platforms, since Apple doesn’t allow core pinning. But they are still considered by HQPlayer.

So, do the spikes indicate that efficiency cores are only being used by filters here? Using system scheduler?

Amazing. Looks like you are getting 1x → DSD512 with 7EC-fast, default filters, AND dac correction. Does this also work with Nx, 192k/24? And while I assume that the Sinc filters won’t work, what about ext3?

Was this part of the release today?

Trying it on my base mac mini m4 and I’m getting stutters/pops with any of the ADM7EC modulators that I try - bitrate set at 512. Not using DAC correction and have been using poly-sinc gauss.
