Maddening Play Options (Unwanted, Inconsistent, Unreliable, Annoying, Intrusive)

Tidal, at least, is integrated into Plexamp. Not quite in the same way as Roon is though. Not sure about Qobuz, it may be as well… Just sayin’.

Tidal and Qobuz both work well with Roon.

Not anymore

Never was or will be integrated with Plex

Dude,

You have hit the fundamental problem - most of the community would say ‘features’ - of Roon.

It’s ALL about the software. The inability that users who are not devs, CSS majors, UI/UX engineers, or ‘high bandwidth’ individual with a fluency in range of programming languages is frustrating.

So my advice is to play around with the features and commands to see what works for you. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to deal with conflicting taxonomies - where a term means one thing on one display but it on another (which is very poor UI/UX design). But with a it of patieb, you should be okay.

Roon needs to hire some product development folks to expand and better serve its user base. They don’t seem very interested in that basic business development step (very typical of software devs…).

So we’re going to hope this group of very talented group of music-loving software devs and engineers find a way to manage - and grow - their lame ass customer service.

I don’t see what’s so difficult about the choice between playing an album now or playing it later.

Hundreds of millions of “users who are not devs, CSS majors, UI/UX engineers, or ‘high bandwidth’ individual with a fluency in range of programming languages” use Microsoft Office which is 100 times more complex than Roon.

Hi @James_Stocker, any comments on the remarks posted here? Just wondering.

Not so sure that is true, as to expand and better serve its user base is the only thing ROON has going for it. ROON as a software exists primarily to combine other pieces of software that already exist into one unifying UI and hopefully positive UX. While there may be some hardware manufacturers who produce wonderful hardware but only mediocre software with poor GUI design to accompany it, ROON is basically all about it’s UI/UX, there is nothing there besides it.
And for the most part, ROON is doing a darn good job at it. Yes, it’s not perfect and has quirks and quarks and quibbles, but it offers quite a good service to a lot of users.

The “problem” is that many people expect many different things from ROON. For some, mulit-room is essential, others could not care less about that, for some, it’s very important that ROON gets information, artist bios, lyrics, and connections between artists, composers, and producers, possibly filling gaps in tags, others think it’s more important that ROON can do volume levelling and playlists, and so on.

Sure, that could be the reason, but touch has evolved, and real contextual menus have been common for years now. I know that there will be no easy way to let Roon follow standards, as many users get used to the old way or don’t use a lot of other IT stuff.

I really appreciate all the replies. I am still getting my head around things but have largely worked out how to use and ignore the functions as required. The other difficulty I was having was understanding that the server and each room operate independently from each other in ways I did not expect. For example, all the options were appearing on the end points when I’d made by selections on the server. Now I understand you need to make them per device or per status - i.e on the device - Focusrite Scarlett 2ii2 (Asio and Wasapi which I use to as the sound with my Asus PC as the ), Cambridge AX10, Macbook Air M3, IPhone 12, Bowers and Wilkins PX7 SE Roon Ready, Chromecast or Airplay. Cambridge AX10 Having experienced Audirvana, I had some sort of idea a “server” that is wifi related and have never been able to switch playing spaces seamlessly. The play options frustration is I guess just reflective of being a little overwhelmed and having a multitude of head scratching exercises to perform across the board. I just want to be able to go to an album, playlist or track and play it by clicking on a track to render it active and then press play. The play from here button therefore is the only function I use but I have activated all the options that I have control over as I imagine their use will come to me eventually

Yeah, some things are settings per endpoint, and others apply centrally to all endpoints.
