Make Ext4 SSD reusable

Hi,
just replaced the SSD of my Nucleus with a bigger one and copied the music library back up, went perfectly thanks to your help.
Now I want to use the old SSD for other things, I put it in an external enclosure but my Mac doesn’t recognize the ext4 drive so I can’t reformat it.
Need help from the experts again!

Macs by default aren’t able to read/write ext4 but the disk should be recognized. Did you look in Disk Utility after plugging in?

Yes, I connect it via USB but the Disk Utility does not even see it. I only would like to reformat it but therefore it must be recognized.

No idea, sorry, assuming that you connected it correctly and didn’t kill it with electrostatic discharge.

Does your nucleus recognize it as external disk?

Perhaps you could try a Linux distribution running from a USB stick to see if it can access the SSD. As ext4 is natively supported by Linux.

No, no way on Mac!

And on the nucleus? You could even attach it to a phone.

I just connected it to the nucleus, but It does not recognise it as additional storage.

Most likely either a connection is not correct or it’s fried. Did you take ESD precautions?

So, check the cables, reassamble the enclosure, try another usb adapter. The drive probably is fine.

@Nickpi
Thanks for Your suggestion !!, the problem was the new USB-enclosure that had a problem with ext4.
Exchanged it and the old USB-Exclosure worked!
Thank You very much!!

If your computer cannot see the drive in one enclosure but can in another, it is a compatibility issue with the drive and the enclosure. It has nothing to do with the partition type (ext4). Enclosures don’t care about how the drive is formatted.

You don’t need a special program. In Disk Utility, click on view and select show all devices. Then find your SSD and select the top most node of it. Then erase it and select the prefrered format.
